Welcome back to After-school Argenziano families!!
We are excited to welcome former students as well as new students & families this school year! It is almost time for the fall season and cooler weather but we are enjoying the warm weather outside as much as we can.
Clubs have just started and so far they are going well and the kids are having fun! Let’s check out what each grade level is up to..
Pre-K (Ms. Mandy):
Pre-K friends were excited to kick off the new school year with some fun and creative art activities! Icebreakers and introductions were made during the first week so all friends in the group can familiarize themselves with each other. Students then participated in fun activities such as rainbow collages, bracelet making, scavenger hunts, cloud-dough experiments, and more!
K-2nd grade (Ms. Lia, Ms. Cruz & Ms. Brianna):
This week in Disney Mania club, we focused on Finding Nemo. Students got into teams and colored cards with different ocean animals including Nemo and Dory. Then they worked together in teams to hide the sea creatures around the playground and rushed to find some hidden by the other team. After we officially “found Nemo”, we ended the club making sea animal crafts using paper plates
3rd-5th (Mr. Mark):
Hey and happy September from Mr. Mark in-group 5! It has been great meeting all the 3rd graders and other new faces, and saying hi to familiar 4th and 5th graders. (In addition, it has been a pleasure seeing a handful of 6th graders become mentors!) It has also been exciting starting my own clubs for the first time. My Thursday club is Wacky Wordplay, and last week we learned about anagrams —those things where one phrase scrambles into another, like "silent" and "listen," or "astronomer" and "moon starer." Then we made anagrams of our own names! (Mark Gartsbeyn anagrams to "Barker Gymnast!" Maybe in a past life I was a particularly acrobatic dog.)

Hello Healey Hawks! After-school is so excited to have your kiddos in our care. We have gotten to meet some amazing personalities and we can’t wait to continue to watch them grow and learn all year long. We have a lot of returning faces among our kids and staff this year as well as some new ones. Stay tuned for monthly updates on all the fun crafts and games students are participating in during their time in after-school.
This month for Mr. Henry’s clubs the kids will be doing all sorts of different activities. A new club this year, Lego World, allows the kids to explore architecture and engineering. For the month of September, we will be focusing on building a variety of houses and bridges. Who can build the strongest?.
In health and nutrition, the students will help create a variety of smoothies to encourage healthier snack choices. This club also has a wellness aspect that will encourage students to live healthy in all parts of their lives. To start, we will focus on different exercise activities, like walking, that we can do to stay healthy.
In Spanish 101 the kids will learn about Spanish heritages and the different cultures and backgrounds of each of the counties. The students will also learn about each country's different food choices.
In master of games, the students will learn the rules and strategies for playing chess as well as, how to play uno flip. Then the students will have a chess competition. In perler beads the students will make a fall design theme out of perler beads. The students will also make their name out of perler beads as well.
Hello, my name is Alex Walters and I just started working at Healey as a Kindergarten Paraprofessional during the day in Ms. Bruneault's class, and a Lead After School teacher in the afternoons. I have worked in education for 3 years - 2 of my previous years being at East Somerville Community School with Kindergarten-6th grade. I have an extensive background in childcare - beginning my freshman year in high school when I was asked to volunteer for a Kindergarten summer program, to my time in college as a camp counselor every summer for ages 5-13.
This semester, I am teaching 3 clubs: The Art of Performing, Soccer Club, and Olympic Games.
In the first meeting of The Art of Performing, students learned what a performing art is, we discussed each of their favorite types, and then played "two truths and a lie," an icebreaker game that introduced the students to each other and allowed them to warm up their performing skills by speaking and acting in front of the group. Students were excited to explore the costumes we would be using the rest of the semester and each came up with a funny outfit. The rest of the semester will be a dive into the various types of performing arts, from the most popular like acting, singing, and dancing, to the smaller scale like standup comedy and even magic!
In the first week of Soccer Club, we reviewed the basics, practiced passing and stopping, and then played "destroy the castle," a fun game where students are able to practice their shooting while also knocking over tall structures their friends have built. The rest of the semester will be a chance to have fun and improve soccer skills by playing different games that practice different skills each week.
For the first meeting of the Olympic Games club, we warmed up with the classic Capture the Flag. For the rest of this semester, students in this club will have a real chance to move and to be competitive, to develop teamwork skills and to learn to play by the rules.
The number one objective for all of my clubs is to have fun and to be happy, so students will definitely have a blast!
The Joy of Painting- In “The Joy of Painting” Club, students are welcomed into a calm, quiet environment each session in order to unwind after a long school day. With world-famous painter Bob Ross as our guide, students learn new painting techniques each week and how they can express themselves through art.
Art with Fruit Club- In “Art with Fruit,” students explore a variety of fruits and vegetables and discuss their health benefits. Additionally, students get the chance to make different animals, shapes, etc. using the fruit. They are then given the option to eat their creation once they have finished.
Aquabeads- In “Aquabeads,” students are introduced to the art of crafting different objects using beads. Once they have finished, water will be added to keep the beads together, and students will be able to take their masterpieces home with them.

We’re off to a great start this September. The kiddos have picked their clubs and are trying it all with open hearts and minds. The weather has been cooperating when we go on our nature walks. And we are enjoying the fall weather while we can! Every month we light to highlight the special clubs or activities that take place at the Benjamin G. Brown afterschool program. This gives insight to what we like to do but also, some of the creative outcomes. Take a look at the awesome clubs this session!
KARAOKE
Not gonna lie, one of my favorites. Combining the power of song and reading you get a fabulous two for one club. The students are practicing sight reading while singing. What better way to beef up those reading skills?!
ARTIST CLUB
Each week the students in this club learn about a different artist and then practice the style. This time the kiddos learned about Heather Hansen who creates large pieces using physical movement of her body. The symmetrical movements create awesome large pieces. The artist typically works in charcoal, our kiddos used chalk and the blacktop!
STENCIL CRAFTS
Getting started with drawing takes a ton of practice and the right can-do attitude. This group explores shapes and identifies them in the space. Once they identify the shapes they’ll practice drawing them using stencils and then filling the space how they see fit.
Check back next month on some of our special clubs taught here at the Brown.
See you in October!

Welcome new and returning families to East Somerville Afterschool program. Everyone is back from summer vacation and we are thrilled to see old friends and make new ones. We are looking forward to a fun-filled year.
September has been a big month for students and teachers alike! These last couple of weeks have been great as the children and teachers settle in their new classrooms and routines here at ESCS Afterschool. Our preschool and kindergarten students are learning new routines and our older students are perfecting routines we worked so hard to build last year.
During the few weeks before clubs begin we have explored lots of different activities, including Art, Science, sports, painting, trivia, and even a civics game in voting.

We are starting off our year with themes on autumn and friendship! Fall weather is upon us and what better way to celebrate the beginning of school that with apples, pumpkins, and spending time outdoors! We are also focusing on friendship building and what it means to be a “good friend”, as well as the many different emotions that we experience.
In addition to our regular clubs, Strong Women, Strong Girls will begin on Monday October 3rd . Our 3rd -6th grade students are very excited to meet their college mentors in a program that develops self-esteem, teamwork, and empowerment. We are very excited to partner with an organization that works so hard to promote strength and community in our young girls.

We would like to welcome our new students and parents to Capuano Afterschool.
In all the classes here, the children are learning our expectations for play in the playground and classroom. They are learning the names of their new friends and they are learning respect and friendship skills in general. We are also diving right into emotional self-regulation and self-care.
All the classes have been doing lots of activities. For example, room 202 and 108 both had students draw self-portraits and family portraits. Room 218 is concentrating on team building skills. Room 137 has focused on getting settled into an after school routine, like singing happy birthday while washing hands.
All the classes have also been spending ample time outdoors and having loads of fun during choice time!
We are looking forward to a wonderful year. We would like to encourage all parents to talk to us about any questions, wishes or concerns.

Hi everyone! Welcome Back!
I just want to say a quick thank you to everyone who helped and purchased items from our After School Amazon Wish List. We truly appreciate everything and please know that it will all get great use this year.
It has been so great to welcome back so many familiar faces and meet so many new ones as well! We have been full steam ahead with after school here at the Kennedy. Everyone has been having fun learning, playing, and interacting with one another. Students who had not seen each other all summer are becoming fast friends again and it has been nice to see new friendships blossom as well.
Our teachers and outside providers have planned some engaging, creative, and cooperative clubs for our students to enjoy and learn in. We have had fun working together and using our creative minds in lego club and DEILAB. Students worked together to build bey-blades, lego houses, and more!
Students have had fun creating works of art in Art in Spanish, Origami club, art from the heart and jewelry-making club. We are looking forward to becoming scientists soon in STEM club and mad scientists club as well as learning about engineering and math as well. Students are working on their cooperative skills and teamwork skills in the Gym Class Heroes clubs.
Comic book club is off to a great start! We spent time last week making our own sketchbooks to use throughout the session. Students were excited to start brainstorming ideas for their very own books, and I am looking forward to seeing what they create!
We spent the first day of the mixed media art club painting self-portraits, it was great to see the students show their personalities through painting and get to know them a little more!
Students are enjoying the nice weather too. Summer is lingering and it has been nice to enjoy such great weather on the basketball court and tot lot. With fall moving in we will still enjoy the outside just remember to pack students a sweatshirt or coat!

Pre-K
The pre-k kiddos have been getting to know all about Ms.Latifa and the fun activities they will be doing this year. They have been introduced to yoga, which they will continue to practice throughout their time in afterschool, and they are loving it! They have also begun to play with their activity stations and our kitchen play is proving to be a crowd favorite. As they settle into their school life our little friends are doing amazing!
Kindergarten
The kindergarten students have been getting familiar with all of their new teachers. They are making some new friends with our first and second graders. They’ve also been introduced into our clubs and are loving Kidstock! In kidstock they are able to let out all of their silly and creative energy through interpretive acting and goofy activities. They too have been enjoying the outside time with their first/second grade friends but the kindergarten also gets special activity time with Ms.Daniela!
Grades 1st-2nd
Our first and second grade friends have been spending lots of time outside, enjoying the warm weather while it lasts. Their favorite outside activities include the swing, the big and little slide, as well as chalk! Farrington Nature is one of our returning clubs that continues outside throughout the whole session. The kids have been learning all about nature and the things they can do with our elements. We have recently started Pokemon club and our Pokemon Trainers are more than excited to get to do all types of activities with their favorite pokemon!
Grades 3rd-6th
Our third grade through sixth pupils have had a loud and eventful start to the year. It has been jam packed with creativity, clubs, reading and enjoying the last of the nice weather. Farrington nature continues to be a favorite club for our students who enjoy nature and appreciation for the planet. The world around us is a popular subject this year, Ms. Veronicas globetrotterz club is also popular for its curriculum in diversity, inclusion and culture around the world. Our third through sixth grade kiddos have shown an interest in learning beyond what is normal to them and pushing past their comfort zones.

Hello Families!
Welcome to the 2022-2023 School Year!
Hello everyone, we hope your school year has been off to a fantastic start! It’s been wonderful to see everyone again and hear about the fun things that happened over the summer. We’re excited to be back at Afterschool and are looking forward to an awesome year.
Our Pre-K friends have been adjusting to being in school and Afterschool for the first time! Ms. Jane & Ms. Darly have been working hard to make our tiniest friends feel comfortable and safe in their new environment. They have enjoyed Ms. Jane and Ms. Darley especially when it comes to their weekly talent show and cannot forget about their daily Yoga lessons, which have been a welcome way to decompress after a long school day. Our little friends are always excited to hear about their activities ranging from Soccer, Kindness club, and we cannot forget about our weekly Karaoke time. This week's theme is Coco and we will be jamming to Un Poco Loco!! Tickets will be on sale soon at the box office. Get your tickets soon, I heard they will be performing at the TD Garden.
Our K-2nd grade friends have started their clubs and are having fun getting to know their club providers and exploring the different options being offered this session. Our friends are experiencing a variety of learning, ranging from Nature Explorer with our very own Ms. Vanessa, understanding the fundamentals of Dance in our JAE Haitian dance club, to becoming Future Gardeners of America in GroundWorks! Our friends in DEI Lab started with building popular cars using Lego engines. Now, you know we can't forget about the next film directors of Somerville: in our new club CinemaKidz, students are learning how to create a movie by using greenscreens, creating outfits and scripts for their future movies. I heard a rumor that Michael B Jordan could potentially be starring in our films.
Our 3rd-5th students have also been excited to start their clubs. We have some returning favorites this session, including Veggie Circus and Soccer Club with coaches from Rush NE! In addition to CinemaKidz and Groundworks, new club offerings joining the lineup this session include Board Game Club and Debate Club. We had a hilarious time playing Apples to Apples in our first week of Board Game club, and Exploding Kittens was a source of many laughs as well (don’t worry, no animals were harmed in the process!). We’ve started to tackle some serious topics in Debate Club such as, “is a hot dog a sandwich?” and “is cereal a soup?” while discussing how to form a strong argument and articulate our thoughts. Some of our friends have also enjoyed traveling to MetroRock Climbing Center in Everett to learn the basics of an awesome hobby in one of the places where climbing on the walls is actually allowed!
