Happy New Year Argenziano families! We hope you enjoyed your winter break. Our staff and students are eager to start new clubs this month! We are excited to create crafts in Makerspace, keep our bodies active in Rush Soccer & Sparks Fitness, learn how to cook, and become engineers & Pokemon trainers! Let’s check out what each grade level is up to.
Pre-K (Ms. Mandy):
For this month’s winter theme, students engaged in frosty and magical experiments and art projects. We created winter crowns, handprint penguins, snow globes, popsicle stick snowflakes, and more! Students participated in exciting science activities such as exploding snowman experiment, creating fake snow, and snowflake salt painting.
K-2nd grade (Ms. Lia, Ms. Cruz, Ms. Elizabeth, Ms. Etta & Ms. Brianna):
For session 2 clubs we are welcoming back some favorites as well as some fun newer clubs. The kids are happy to play games, compete in Sparks Fitness, and work together in teams to build elaborate lego structures in Lego Challenge. The students are also excited to learn how to cook sweet & savory treats, become scientists in Steam & Sensory Cafe, build cool crafts in Makerspace and be a Pokemon trainer! In Cinema Kidz this session, the students will transform into Superheroes and film fun videos. There are many cool, exciting clubs to explore!
3rd-5th (Mr. Mark):
Hey and happy new year from Mark in-group 5! I have enjoyed sharing some new and old clubs with our 3rd to 5th grade friends this last week. My Wednesday club this session is Engineering Rescue Shuttles, which is testing a curriculum developed by Youth Engineering Solution at Penn State University. Last week, we learned about the Engineering Design Process to create functional pencil boxes out of common household materials; this week, we were tasked to begin developing stomp rocket "rescue shuttles" to send materials to folks who need aid in flood scenarios. (To be honest, I meant to get more photos of the actual design/testing process, but we were just too busy designing and testing! Please excuse my feverish scientific scribblings.)
P.S.: Thanks to the families that so kindly gave gift cards in December! I have used most of the Target money to bolster my kid-friendly (and Mark-friendly) board game collection, which I'll start sharing with the group soon. Stay groovy!

Hello families and a happy and healthy new year to you all! We are looking forward to creating so many new memories with your students here in 2023 and we can’t wait to share those memories with you. Our second session of clubs kicked off right after we returned from break and the students are already loving the activities.
Mr. Henry:
This month in a minute to win it, the students are going to be trying to accomplish and solve each different level of challenges in under a minute. Students in So you think you can sing, the students will be singing their favorite songs either solo or duets. In scavenger hunters, the students will be solving different kinds of themes of scavenger hunts. In Chess and Checkers the students will work on learning how to play regular chess and Chinese checkers. This month the students will also start to work on nonfiction and fiction stories with illustrations in their creative writing club.
Mr Alex:
Pokemon Go:
This session in Pokemon Go club, we will explore the wonderful world of Pokemon. We have had one meeting so far, and in that meeting we had an introduction to Pokemon, showed each other our favorite Pokemon and our favorite elemental type, and we each chose our own elemental type of which we will each become Pokemon trainers.
Painting Planet Earth:
This session in our Painting Planet Earth club, we will explore our solar system, the sun and the various planets and moons that make it up, and especially our home planet of Earth. In our first meeting, we learned the basics about our solar system, the difference between stars, planets, and moons, and then painted a view of earth from outer space.
Basketball Club:
This session in Basketball club, we will improve our basketball skills. In the first club meeting, we learned how to play the classic game "Knockout." We look forward to having fun in the gym and outdoors on our new basketball courts this session!
Mr. P:
Page to screen club: This week we read “The Night at the museum” and afterwards started to watch the movie that was adapted from the book. During the movie we tried to find any differences we saw.
Play-doh sculpture club: This week we created imaginary animals out of play-doh, pipe cleaners, and feathers.
Soccer club: This week we have moved on from learning the rules of soccer to creating teams and playing some games.
Miss Suri:
PreK is continuing to have so much fun practicing our fine motor control through tracing and cutting. Students have been learning more of their letters, focusing on E, G and H this month. The students decorated their own elephants and horses. Their imaginations ran wild with an ice cream cone activity. We had some very interesting flavors make an appearance like one friend's “moss ice cream” which we were told actually tastes like avocado! Students used glitter to add sprinkles and had so much fun making Miss O try all their mix and match flavors. Students also began having SEL lessons with Miss O on Mondays! This month we were introduced to our friend “Learning Spot” who helps our brains grow. Learning Spot read a story about making friends with our students and we then created beautiful friendship trees together. All students used their handprints to decorate each other's trees to fill them with color! We can’t wait to continue all our learning.
Miss Michelle:
In Fun and Fantasy book Club, we are accessing our creativity and critical thinking skills through reading books about Dragons, and doing imagination exercises and activities centered around the question: "What would I do if I owned a dragon?"
In Storybook Club, we are learning how to create stories as a group through Mad libs, and other Storytelling exercises. In abstract Art Club, we are exploring art through shapes! We are learning about cubist painters that use specific shapes in their art. We are observing paintings by these artists, and then creating artwork inspired by these painters.
Mr. T:
Little Artists- In Little Artists Club, students will get the chance to study famous pieces of art and then get to create it themselves. Thus far, we have looked at Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” painting, and we have attempted to sketch it in our brand new sketchbooks. Now that they have taken their first shot at drawing it, students will now get the opportunity to paint their own version of “Starry Night”.” We will be drawing, painting, and doing many other types of arts and crafts throughout the course of this club.
Gameshow Club- Thus far in Game Show Club, we have played Jeopardy. Students were super excited to get the chance to use their Disney movie knowledge to compete against their classmates. This club will involve different types of games, both physical and mental, and each week a new student will get the chance to be “host.”
Comic Book Club- Throughout the session of Comic Book Club, students will learn about all that goes into creating their own comic book. They will come up with main characters, villains, and develop their own plot. So far, we have practiced making mini comic strips to get acclimated to the comic-making process.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
New year, new clubs. We’ve kicked things in to high gear this session and have at least one movement club each session. During the winter The Brown afterschool gets creative to find ways to move our bodies. Without a Gym or cafeteria the students rely on the blacktop to get their bodies moving. However, sometimes the weather keeps us inside. Our program brings in movement breaks and clubs that have activities that get our blood pumping. However, we’ve had pretty warm weather this year! WE DO WANT SNOW. I repeat, this school wants snow! We want to take the kiddos outside for sledding. So, we’ve asked the students to wish for snow. Hopefully this works in our favor. Don’t want to wish too hard and get a snow day.
Recycle This
In this creative club students are given materials that are often recycled in our blue bins. The students receive a build or create challenge. In this particular pictures students were challenged to create a house. Many students took it like champs. Of course none of the teachers or kids could fit into these houses. Perhaps dolls and lego characters could! Kiddos get to decorate using paper materials out of the art recycle bin. Using every last scrap to build. Each week the challenge will be different! Expect lots of neat designs and recycle art pieces to come home.
Proves you can make just about anything out of the materials you have.
Drawing is Fun!
Sometimes all you want to do is sit down with a sweet coloring set and paper. This group loves to doodle, color, chat, and create. We’ll pick some of our favorite songs to play in the background and chill. Sometimes we watch how to draw videos and learn to draw fun kawaii objects. Our kiddos are so creative and if you give the markers, they will draw. Goodness if you give them dirt they will draw. These kids are quite resourceful.
Ancient Worlds
One way to learn about ancient world is through crafts. This session kids will explore new places through art. Afterwards they create a cool craft. Here they created 3D pyrimdes after learning about Ancient Egypt. Our kiddos made three sided pyramids too!
How many ancient worlds can you think of? I’m sure this group will explore many of them, and even come up with made up ancient worlds.
Abstract Art
In abstract art the silliness has no bounds. The kiddos explore different styles of abstract art and artists that create them. Here our kiddos drew portraits of people they knew with their eyes closed! Oddly enough you could see the resemblance. We’re pretty sure this group will create a new style of abstract art by the end of this session.
Lego Design Architect
Yes, we’re lego masters. We work without guides most of the time. These kiddos are now designing their masterpieces first then building with their designs. We’re architects in the making! We take in consideration of the materials and the dreams to make it become a reality. Sometimes students will work together on larger projects. They’re learning how to communicate and build strong relationships through team activities.

Hello East Community,
Happy New Year and welcome to 2023! Afterschool is up and running again this time with fresh new clubs. All students have started the year with new activities that the clubs are able to provide. Students are awakening their creativity and excitement once again after the break! We can’t wait to show you all the great things that are happening at the ESCS Afterschool Program.
This session we have welcomed back some of our favorite outside providers that we haven’t seen such as Art In Spanish and KidStock! These clubs have had a strong start in learning what to expect for the remainder of the session and getting started with teambuilding activities. We were also able to welcome back some of our popular clubs such as Parkour and MetroRock. Students in MetroRock have already begun their obstacle courses and are always so eager to go back the following week to continue.
Our PreK-2nd grade students have had lots of fun testing out their new clubs and discovering new talents. Many students have learned to play Bingo for the first time in the all new Bingo club! Connections has also been a big hit amongst our students. It is a club and place where students are able to take a moment to relax, sit down and chat about friendship, kindness, and other fun topics. For our friends who love to read, we have Storytime & Crafts where students get to read a story as a group and then create art inspired by the story. Students have also been getting crafty and creating their own jewelry in the jewelry kids club using different materials such as different colored beads and some string.
3rd-6th Grade have been enjoying from their fresh clubs. In the club Snack & Chat, students get to sit down with each other and their teachers to chat about topics and reflect on our thoughts about the topic. These students also get to have a special snack while chatting with each other! This club will help students in learning new ways to respectfully communicate with each other and will strengthen their bond as a group.
Basketball Basics has started with teaching students how to dribble, pass and shoot. They are all also learning sportsmanlike behavior and how to work as a team to be the best they can be! All of our 3rd-6th grade students have also been joining some outside time as much as they can after some homework time.
Lastly, board games has been so popular that students didn’t even want to stop playing with their peers! Some even said that they wish they had that club everyday.
We are happy to be back with new clubs and new activities. We are also so eager and excited to see what great things this new session will bring us!

Here at Capuano After-School, in January, we have been doing a wide variety of activities. We are having fun dressing up in beautiful costumes and playing with new toys. We are doing winter themed projects and lots of other creative artwork. We also play outdoors when the weather permits, and in the gym when we can’t go out. The photos from this month tell the story in the best way possible!
In room 108, we are having fun dressing up in beautiful costumes, playing with new toys, playing outdoors with the parachute, making winter themed projects and doing some fun science.
In room 133, they are doing a hodge-podge of creative activities, from David Goes to School paper bag puppets to wizard hats and grumpy cats. Room 133 also has some new toys and new costumes for dramatic play.
In room 218, they are doing winter themed projects, water color painting and lots of other creative artwork. 218 got an infusion of new toys as well.
In room 202, they are having fun playing with playdough and learning about winter and winter animals. New toys from the holiday haul will be arriving soon in 202 too.
All of Capuano also plays outdoors when the weather permits, and in the gym when we can’t go out. The photos from this month tell the story in the best way possible!

Kids in Laura’s clubs have been busy doing fun experiments and being creative in many ways as our new session begins! You Do Yours have been engineering a biosphere, preparing for life on the moon. Our mad scientists have been replicating the warmth whales get from blubber and producing weather in a jar. The extreme artists have been making glow in the dark alebrijes and have enjoyed finding out about these fantastical creatures in Mexican folk art. They loved making art in the dark! Kids have been discovering how their small actions can make a huge impact on the world through learning about helping Cape Cod sea turtles.
Creating talking sticks and finding out that Native American legends influenced how people listen to each other was interesting for kids to explore, too!
Craft club was off to a good start by making our own sketchbooks. Students will work on these sketchbooks at the beginning of each club to get the creative juices flowing before we move into other projects. Knitting is next on the crafting agenda and students seem eager to learn!
Lego club with the younger grades has been going great! We began the session by making Lego hotels.
Students got very creative in their builds, some making pools, hot tubs, hotels for animals, and even added a zip line to one!
We cannot wait to see what other Lego creations they will make!
Our Pre-K friends have enjoyed doing watercolor and hanging out with Pre-K the fish.
Recycled Art Club:
Students in the Recycled Art Club melted crayons and used hot glue to make really neat projects. Seeing their creativity shine through was really great to see!
Origami Club:
Our 3-5th graders in Ms. Kelly’s origami club has really been enjoying learning the art of origami and they have all started to excel at new and old creations. Here we have a few friends displaying their hummingbirds!
DEILAB- Our DEILAB clubs have really taken to being engineers this session. They built structures with roller coaster pieces and then had to test their structures out. The instructors have been so engaging with our students and it is great to see how their minds works
Some of our 2nd graders showing off some cool jewelry they made with beads and pipe cleaners! We have some pretty creative kids in our program!!
Last but not least, a few more 2nd graders have really been enjoying building this roller coaster out of kinects. We recently found this bin of kinects and kids have become budding architects ever since. Any time they don’t have homework or when they finish their homework and quiet reading, they are adding to their creations!
As always, please let Ms. Alison know if you have any questions, etc. Have a great January!

Happy New Year Families!
We hope you all enjoyed your holidays. Our kiddos had a wonderful time at our end of year holiday party, what a great way it was to kick off the new year! Students and staff are winding down after the break and have been sharing wonderful stories and resolutions for this new year amongst each other. This new semester students are climbing out of their comfort zones and with new clubs, making new friends and expanding their knowledge. We are so excited to see the children's growth and success that is to come this year.
As a reminder, If you would like your child to be able to frolic outdoors they need coats, hats, and mittens. Snow clothes are highly recommended when snow is present.
Pre-K
Ms. Latifa has been teaching our Pre-K bunch about snow and winter this new session. Very appropriate for the season and clothing we wear during this time. At circle time before snack the kiddos are reading stories about super fun winter activities, like Big Snow by Jonathan Bean and Winter is Here by Keven Kenkes. Ms. Latifa is always sure to run engaging interactive activities to make the day speed by! Along with reading they enjoy STEM activities like artificial snow storms in a jar and various winter themed crafts.
Kindergarten
Our little einsteins have been enjoying their new clubs and have shortened their free play hour from 5 days a week to 3 days! They love the schedule change as they now enjoy show and tell every Thursday and two clubs on Fridays! From 4pm- 5pm the kids are all enrolled in Deilab, an engineering based club that allows the kids to express their creativity through architecture and imagination. Ms. Daniela enjoys watching the children grow into their personalities and interests.
Grades 1st-2nd
We’ve started strong in clubs already! We have Hogwarts Heros, where students got to choose out of the Sorting Hat to find out what Hogwarts House they’d be in for the session. This came along with a fun Hogwarts acceptance letter and a yummy treat! In Minute to Win It, friends worked together to cover each other from head to toe in toilet paper. Following along with our team building activities, students were also able to work together in Block Heads to build a sturdy bridge. Some of our bridges held up to 15 apples!!
Grades 3rd-6th
Our older group has gotten the opportunity to join Metro Rock which has QUICKLY become a crowd favorite. The students loved being able to try something new. They’ve continued to strengthen their imagination skills through reading time everyday. Our older group is encouraged to be the best version of themselves everyday through earning tickets for being a good helper and friend. They also have jobs that involve assisting K-2nd during drop off and snack time. Ms. Veronica is running interesting clubs for this group including Build It and Canvas Kids!

Hello Families and Friends!! Welcome to the new year!
It has been an outstanding start of the year so far. I can say we finished 2022 strong and welcomed the new year. This year is going to be 10x better than last year, I can assure you that. The new session for clubs has begun and it has been an amazing session so far, welcoming back some of our super fun clubs such as Dei Lab, Groundworks, etc. Although we have returning clubs, we also have new clubs to welcome into our session, such as Parkour Club, Dungeons and Dragons, Magic the Gathering etc. This is only the beginning of what is to come for afterschool.
Now I would like to welcome to the stage, the lyrically acclaimed PreK! Everyday it has been an adventure with our younger friends. I would like to point out that we might have our very own Great British Baking show, because our friends have been making gingerbread cookies from scratch. I can promise you the flavor of these cookies is extravagant! Now if they aren't doing their bake off, then we are having our older friends role modeling and reading to our younger friends. It's something that our Pre-K students can look forward to for the week, and also give them an idea of what they can become as they get older. If you ever thought that Bob the Builder was the best Builder then you have never met a PreK student from West Somerville. Who do you think came up with the blueprint for our new high school?
On today’s episode of Somerville’s Got Talent, we have our amazing younger friends who are ready to take the stage and be the Number #1 band ever. Ranging from the blues all the way to rock & roll, these kids are ready to bring down the house. I would like to present to the world our very own band, ACBC. In the karaoke club with Ms. Vanessa, she has been teaching the band about vocals, tunes, mixing, and even working on dancing on stage. Our next concert will be at the 2023 Latin Grammys, and the Country Music Awards, please make sure to get your tickets ahead of time before they are sold out. Now if we don't have the band together that and have a zero gravity earth. It sounds ludicrous, but I promise it's so much fun, especially when we are playing tag. Then we are working on the next cure to solve zero gravity on earth. That's right you read it here first, we are on the move to save Earth in Space Cadet Club. In this club we are studying earth gravity and trying to change
Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders had a restful break and we were so excited to see our friends after the vacation. We rang in the new year with an exciting new club: grab your D20 and roll for initiative, because it’s time to embark on our first Dungeons & Dragons adventure! Our imaginations will take us far beyond the familiar realm of Somerville and across the sea to Stormwreck Isle, a land where ancient dragons roam and magical forces await our discovery. When we aren’t exploring new horizons and battling fierce creatures (who don’t stand a chance against our wisdom and strength), we’re learning how to move in new ways in Parkour, creating custom keychains that show off our personalities in Canvas Art Club, and honing our improve skills and self-expression in Kidstock and Veggie Circus.
Reminders
As winter approaches make sure we are packing jackets, gloves, boots, scarves,
Our Lost & Found is filling up quickly with the change of season. Consider labeling your child’s coats/sweatshirts to ensure they make it home if left behind!
-Pack extra clothes for our younger students in case of an emergency
Thank you!
