Happy October Argenziano families! We are now almost halfway through the first session of clubs and are embracing the fall season and cooler weather. In some of our nature/outdoor clubs and when we are outside the kids are observing the leaves change into pretty colors. Let’s check out what each grade level is up to.
Pre-K (Ms. Mandy)
Changing of the weather, warm colored leaves, and cute critters inspired our activities and projects this month! The PreK after-school group participated in gathering beautiful leaves and incorporating them in our various fall-related art projects. We created puffy paint mushrooms, leaf wreaths, vibrant feathered owls, leaf porcupines, pumpkin collages and more!
3rd-5th (Mr. Mark):
Hey hey from Mark in Group 5! Hope everyone's enjoying the cooler weather these days; I know I am. It's been a great opportunity to get outside for my Wednesday Science in the Park club, where we use playgrounds and fields as inspiration to explore topics in science.
In recent weeks, we've used swings to learn about physics, made a scale model of the solar system (if the Earth were a basketball, the Sun would be bigger than Argenziano's gym!), and identified types of trees using handy guides.
Right now, I'm in the process of coming up with some new clubs for next session—one I'm thinking of doing is Mathemagic, a club about the wonders of numbers and geometry.
Stay tuned!
K-2nd grade (Ms. Lia, Ms. Cruz, Ms. Elizabeth & Ms. Brianna):
In Fairytale Engineering club each week we read a book, talk about how the characters are feeling and what problems they face in the book, and then do an engineering challenge based on the book. This week we read “This is the Nest that Robin Built” and talked about why robins make nests. Students used an embroidery hoop, “sticks” (pipe cleaners, string), and “leaves” (pieces of fabric) to make their own nest. They then tested their nest on the “tree”, seeing if it could safely hold eggs and whether it could withstand a “wind storm”. Students encouraged each other to try again when their designs did not work and cheered for each other when their nest held all five eggs!

This month, students in room 207 that are in Mr. Henry’s clubs have been focusing on the fall theme and Halloween theme & how they can incorporate these themes into the variety of clubs offered.
In Lego World we have been working as a group and making bridges. Students have been strengthening their communication skills and their problem solving skills. Students were also challenged to make spooky Halloween themed houses and buildings.
Health and nutrition club has been continuing their brainstorming around what kind of smoothies we can make to have a smarter breakfast or snack choice. We also talked about different types of exercise we can do to maintain a healthy body, such as brisk walks through the neighborhood while we look for the beautiful colors of changing leaves.. The students also worked together to create several options of healthy breakfast meals to enjoy as a family before school.
In Spanish 101 this month we have been talking about how each of the Spanish countries celebrates the Halloween season. We are learning to be respectful of other cultures' celebrations that may be different from our own. We have also been learning about each country's national food.
In Master of Games this month we have been working on uno flip strategy. Uno continues to be the students favorite strategy game to play as they challenge each other each week for the newest UNO champion. Students were also introduced to the game of chess and are slowly learning how to play chess.
In Perler Beads this month we have been making fall themed designs, as well as exploring some Halloween themed designs as well.
Our younger students have been working the gears of their creative brains overtime for the last month in their clubs. We have been working on collaboration in our Lego Masters club.
Students were tasked with using the provided legos to create a maze with a partner. Students had to communicate ideas to each other as well as compromise. The works that were created came out awesome! We’ve also created some flowers which was a harder task than we thought it would be.
Thursdays are quickly becoming my favorite day of the week as watching these students fully engage in learning new designs is amazing! Students have now learned 30 different Zentangle designs. Students began by looking at these designs with intimidation (look up the Fengle pattern!) and quickly learned they are incredibly capable of taking these designs on.
Our Animal Lovers club has been exploring a variety of different animals throughout the weeks. We have studied alongside our friend Stanley and his “great big book of everything” to learn about Octopi and giraffes. We turned cupcake liners into our very own octopus and used paper plates to make giraffe faces. We also tuned into the Kratt brothers' Zoboomafoo show, to learn all about crocodiles. Students got to get messy and create art using just their little toes!
In Everyone is an Artist, students have been exploring the various methods they can use to create art. We learned to make origami butterflies, turned our handprints into Native Americans to celebrate Indigenous People's Day, and were introduced to resistance painting! Miss O loves to combine science and art, and students had so much fun exploring with wax drawings and watercolor paints to create some magical looking images. I have been blown away by the students' progress with our Zentangles club.
Friends in room 208/109 have been hard at work with Miss Michelle. In our Animal Appreciation Club we are learning about nocturnal animals. We are learning what it means to be nocturnal and where we can find nocturnal animals. We decided our favorite nocturnal animal was the bat, and we got to explore bats through a fun painting activity where we created a sunset for our bat to fly through. In Recycled Arts and Crafts, we found used buttons and are using the used buttons to create multicolored art pieces. We saved a whole lot of buttons from the trash and turned them into letters in our name! Finally in Chemistry Club, we learned all about CO2 (carbon dioxide), and how it expands liquid substances. To explore this we put our goggles on and took part in an experiment! Have you ever put Mentos and coca cola together? Turns out it causes a huge eruption!.
Our PreK friends have been having such a fun time with arts and crafts this last month.
We noticed our friends were really interested in planes recently so we wanted to focus a little on planes and other flying objects. Students created their very own styrofoam airplanes that they attached to long strings and flew off around the playground. They also created kites using coffee filters!
To wind down some of the last warmer days we had students create their very own popsicle crafts in their favorite flavors. Students used their hands to paint trees for fall and explored the ocean by creating mini 3D fishies! We’re excited to continue making learning fun, and can’t wait to show you what’s in store for the next month!
Students are really zeroing in on their type of performing art and the type of performance that they'd like to focus on going forward. Wednesday's soccer club has made the transition from drills and games to actual scrimmages. We have had exhilarating wins and heart breaking losses... and will continue to play our hearts out! Thursday's Olympic Games has allowed students to experience classic gym games that we all played as kids, including dodge ball, capture the flag, and all types of tag. There is no shortage of movement in that club! Let's keep having fun!
Mr. Walters' clubs have been going great so far!
On Mondays in The Art of Performing, we have had many chances to get on stage. From dressing up in costumes to playing drama games, to performing stand up comedy and even monologues from movies, we have each embarrassed ourselves on stage at least once so far this semester!

It’s that beautiful time of year! The fall colors are in, the weather is not too warm, not too cold and our favorite colors are popping up everywhere! This month we’re featuring some more of our awesome clubs.
Design Club
We welcome back Julia Austein to the Brown School afterschool as an outside provider. During the day she is our Art teacher and on Thursdays and Friday’s She teaches a Design club. Here the kiddos take their imaginations and put them into action. They design cakes, spaceships, houses, and new means of communication! Our K-2 Students come up with some wonderful creations and designs. How about a house that can shield you from a cheeto storm on another planet! That is this club. Your wildest imagination running wild and your designs are the reins. Pictured is the Volcano cake and how to make it!
Team Challenge
Our 3-5th graders have taken the challenge. The team challenge that is. In this club they’re tasked with all sorts of mental and physical obsticles. From Kickball, to tower building using red cups. One of the most exciting challenges was using all the materials that were stacked on the table and create the tallest tower. Students were using cups, cardboard, plates, straws, random objects from recycling club. They 30 mins to do their best and they used every min to stack. There were three shout outs for the three teams. Most stuff used, tallest, and most creative.
Abstract Art
The K-2 are learning doing some wonderful hands on activities! This is one of those clubs that the kiddos come home with that special art piece for the fridge. They’ll send home masterpieces meant for friends and family. Here the kiddos use cut up pieces of paper to create everyday objects in mosaic patterns. Last week they tried pointillism! Not only are they learning art history, they’re trying it for themselves. Will they create a whole new abstract art movement?
Peaceful Problem Solvers
This year our K-2 group is going through a SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Club. Once a week during Reading hour our teachers share peaceful ways to solve problems. Our littles are still learning other ways to navigate tricky situations. Some of the biggest emotions that are expressed are, “someone cut me in line”, “ My friend won’t play my favorite game.” or “ that kid is saying mean things.” in our Peaceful Problem Solver club we learn what are small problems that even they can solve, and big problems that need an adult to help. This is our first step to becoming peaceful problem solvers. Ask us how we would peacefully solve this problem. “Another kid sat in my spot on the rug!”.
Here our 1st graders are finishing up their meditation before their Peaceful Problem Solving club.

Happy fall! Our session one is rolling smoothly and the students are enjoying their clubs! October has been a great month here so far at the East Somerville. We are so excited about the awesome progress that our students have made in the After-School! Students have had a blast participating in their varieties of daily clubs some of them for the first time! East staff works incredibly hard to have all the students feel included and supported in their own activities and had created a wonderful enrichment curriculum and lesson plans. Students have been rewarded with prizes, tickets to helping out in the office, helping students with homework, popcorn pink lemonade, etc.
It is exciting to see the students learn through various lenses such as, what to make for Let’s Build, Transportation, Animal ABC Art and what to talk about in All About Me and much more.
It is also apple and pumpkin and leaf season, and we are enjoying some seasonal crafts and waiting to taste different color apples to pick our favorite.
The 3rd -6th graders at East Somerville start their day with an hour of homework and independent reading time. They are excited to have extra help from Somerville High School students joining them during homework hour. This will allow the students to receive more individualized attention and support in their academics. We are also fortunate to have a partnership with Tufts University students Strong Women, Strong Girls to support our girls in becoming young women. This club meets weekly and is open to any girl in grades 3-6.
Our Pre-K-2nd graders, students are getting their wiggles out through active clubs learning new athletic skills, such as Team Activities, soccer, Parkour, Gym games, games such as four corners, red light-green light, scramble, students who naturally created kickball games outside that include everyone in their grade group. It is great to see student led structured games and tapping into their problem-solving side through various science experiments, and are learning about history through basics in life and my next museum. After clubs, the kindergarten class will vary between story time (we are reading chapter books now!), arts and crafts, and outside play time. Our first and second graders spend the next half hour on homework and independent reading, finishing up their day with some play time or arts and crafts
Please note, if you signed up for November 8th program day at East Somerville Community School, arrive no later than 9am and pick up is between 3:30-4pm. If you are going to be picked up earlier within the program day, please notify Yolanda, Diana or a teacher so, we can make accommodations
Now that fall is in full swing I'd like to remind parents to pack a coat and some warmer layers for the students as the temperature drops. We hope to spend as much time outside as possible before winter arrives!
At the East, we had a special spirit week during the last week of October. On Friday, students were able to dress up as Superheroes! Our teachers also had a fun time dressing up with the kiddos!

At the beginning of the school year at Capuano, we have lots to learn. We need to learn how to line up, and how to wash our hands. We learn how to share verbally at circle, how to share toys, how to clean up, and we learn lots of new games, songs, and routines.
All the classes here are also learning a little bit about fall and seasonally relevant subjects. We learn about seasonal change, why leaves change color, apples, the apple life cycle, pumpkins and what animals do in the fall.
We read some seasonally relevant imaginative stories such as Dick Gackenbach’s “Harry and the Terrible Whatzit.,” and hope to explore children’s fears as well as introduce some coping strategies.
The weather has been awesome, and we have been enjoying lots of outdoor play, but it will be getting colder. We will try to go outside as much as possible. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the weather including hats, gloves, and boots if necessary. We will also do our best to make sure that the kids are dressed in what you’ve sent. We look forward to having lots of fun during the rest of the fall and during this upcoming winter.

Hi everyone! We are moving right along into the thick of the school year. It is hard to believe the month of October is nearly over. And the holidays will be upon us shortly. We have been having a great time in after school this month, really getting into our clubs as the session is now half way complete!
Outside providers and after school teachers alike have been preparing fun and engaging activities for your children to participate in daily, and we hope they are enjoying themselves!
Take a look at some of the great things we have been doing in clubs this month!
Mr. Ethan’s Clubs:
Here are a few of the fun activities we've been doing in the Kennedy After School.
Hollywood club - Students have learned about the animation process behind some of their favorite disney films, made flip books to emulate classic hand drawn animation, played charades-style acting games, and many other fun activities.
Lego Club - Students have engaged in themed builds, including pyramids, tower building contests, bridges, a spooky fall monster build, and many more exciting projects!
STEM Club - We have been learning about different forces and how they relate to machines and technology. Students have made a lego bridge project to hold a much weight as possible, compared and innovated on paper airplane designs to achieve the farthest possible flight, built popsicle stick catapults to learn about potential energy, and more!
Dr Seuss Book Club - So far our club has read the Yertle the Turtle story collection, Horton Hears a Who, and The Butter Battle Book, with crafts and activities to match the unique themes and lessons of each.
Ocean Explorer's Club - Students have learned about a variety of Deep-sea creatures and ocean environments, combining educational lessons with fun crafts like making cardboard seaturtles, paper plate jellyfish mobiles, and more!
Outside Provider Club Fun!
Veggie Circus- In veggie circus they are learning how to balance a peacock feather on their hands, they are also learning to balance a plate on a stick and have it spin without it falling. They have also learned how to balance the plate on a stick while climbing through a hula hoop.
Cinema Kids- In cinema kids they are learning how many different jobs there are to produce a movie. They are also learning how to use the app on the iPad’s and do close up shots and long shots.
Groundworks- In groundworks the kids have collected leaves and used crayons and paper to create leaf impressions, they also made a big lead pile from all the leaves on the tot lot and jumped and played in them. They have also planted seeds and have now covered them in leaves for the winter.
Soccer Club- In soccer club the kids are learning how to stop the ball before they kick it and how to pass the ball directly to the person they want without it going to the sides and risking the other team getting the ball.
Ms. Emmaline’s Clubs-
Jewelry club has been very busy this month! We have been making bracelets, necklaces, rings and recently learned how to make earrings! It was great to see the students excited about a new craft and also be able to wear what they made!
In the mixed media art club- we have been hard at work! Students got to draw their dream houses on large paper (for maximum creativity) and then had the opportunity share them with each other. We had houses in sharks, spy houses with lasers and even some haunted ones. We have also been taking time to learn about famous artists and their work. Recently we learned about the life of Yayoi Kusama and then created pumpkins inspired by hers! Looking forward to seeing what else these student artists create!
Ms. Kelly’s Clubs
Origami club- Hi parents! So far this month it’s been a blast with the kids. In the origami club we’ve been working on certain animals. So far we’ve made bunnies, dogs, bats, and more to come.
Mad scientist club- Each week students are given a stem challenge. Students can build and create in this club. They have built recycled boats and have tested their theories. It’s been great having students learn to work in groups too in their experiments. We have also experimented with apples decaying and seeing which liquid will decay the apple quickest (apple juice, apple cider vinegar, water, or lemon juice).
Disney art club - Disney art club has been so fun. Students are creating fall-themed Disney crafts during October. We are focusing each week on a Disney character. Students have been helping each other create and craft in this club. Crafts have included Mickey/Minnie ears and books as well as the evil Queen’s poisonous apple craft.
Art from the heart- In art from the heart, we have been experimenting with different styles of art. Each week students have been creating fall-themed art. Students get to make interactive art that can be used to play with later and take home. It’s been great with the kids.
Pre-K Friends
This month, we welcomed Ms. Maureen into our classroom! She is a wonderful addition to our team and we are so happy to have her. Pre-K is settling in nicely and enjoying their time at afterschool. Our biggest focus has been learning the rules of the classroom and getting to know one another. We have been doing a variety of activities within the classroom. Some favorites include pumpkin name puzzles, creating our own leaves, and painting with watercolor. We are so excited to see what the rest of the year has in store for us!
As always, please let Ms. Alison know if you have any questions regarding all things After School.
A reminder about November 8th programming- the program is full. If you signed up for it, you have been enrolled and Ms. Alison will be sending along separate information regarding this day.
If you did not sign up for this program, there is no school or afterschool for your child this day.
Lastly, to those of you who have donated to our Amazon wish list, thank you so much! If anyone would like to make a donation and purchase any of the items still on our list, we greatly appreciate it!

Hello Families!
As the fall weather approaches us this school year our kiddos begin to settle into their routines and clubs. Teachers are actively using visual schedules and reinforcers to model expected and exemplary behavior during after school.
Pre-K
The pre-k kids have been getting familiar with their feelings and how to recognize them. Ms.Latifa has been doing an excellent job to teach the students how to express themselves through fun activities. They’ve been reading stories during circle time about this topic and doing an insightful overview at the end. Kiddos are also widely encouraged to use their words to express the way they are feeling to themselves and others.
Kindergarten
The kindergarten students have continued to be welcoming and kind to our new staff by showing awesome listening skills during activities and clubs. A popular time for our children is choice time. Where kindergarten is able to use their voices and personalities to express themselves by having a variety of activities and choices to interact with one another. Coloring and building blocks is a favorite amongst the students.
Grades 1st-2nd
Our first and second grade kiddos have been enjoying two project based clubs Magic Madness run by Ms.Deijah and Cranium Krusherz run by Ms.Daniela. Magic madness allows the kids to think outside the box and utilize materials and strengthen skills to create fun. Cranium Krusherz is a spin on different stem topics that create scientific projects and engage children into asking questions such as why? when? And how? Each day for the children has become an exciting routine. They’ve been loving their outdoor time, while it lasts; can’t get enough of the park and garden. Our friends have been working hard to strengthen our kindness skill to earn a yummy surprise on Fridays.
Grades 3rd-6th
Our third through sixth grade scholars have been doing a wonderful job winding down to after school. They have been strengthening their listening skills by doing a daily introduction activity before snack time to create a routine. One club that is enjoyable for the kids and allows them to chill out is origami club with Ms.Veronica. During this club the kids are challenged to use creativity and patience at their own pace to achieve a goal. Finding ways to encourage and challenge the older kids is a way we keep them interested and wanting to learn more.

Hello Families!
Welcome to the 2022-2023 School Year!
What an incredible season we are in. The trees are changing colors, apple cider is pouring through our faucets, and the autumn foliage has been a beautiful backdrop for all of the outdoor activities we’ve been able to enjoy as we continue to spend time outside. We’re more than two months into the school year and time has been flying with all the fun we’re having at Afterschool. Please do not hesitate to drop by and say hello. If you do decide to drop by to say hi, I could never say no to a Medium hot coffee! (I'm just Joshing you)
Our tiniest friends have been having a superb time with Ms. Jane and Ms. Darly. Always trying to plot on the older kids. (Just playing!)
Our Pre-K friends are always planning activities to do during afterschool, such as making homemade playdough, slime, and even their very own fruit kabob. I shall advise you though, be careful trying to grab a “free Kabob” because there is a small tip jar on the side that is strongly advised. If they are not doing either of those activities they are carving their very own pumpkin for the season. Please be advised no pumpkins were harmed in this activity, or sharp objects were used! We also cannot forget about our weekly show & tell that has been selling out for weeks.
We have had some extremely fascinating items on display, ranging from the infamous Elton John 7’9” gnome, to our most smoothest crab walk. Tickets will go back on sale next week!
On today’s episode of How Great Afterschool Is,
Our Kindergarten through 2nd graders are enjoying their time by becoming the next famous farmers in our Groundworks club. In GroundWorks they have been learning about herbs and what we are able to do with them, such as making tea, incorporating them in our dinner recipes and how to plant them. If they aren't gardening then they are training for our very own World Cup with the WSNS afterschool soccer team.
They won in our traditional Students vs Teachers game and, I can tell right now, every teacher pulled a muscle. While some of our friends are training our other friends are appreciating the changing of the season in Ms. Vanessa’s Nature Explorers club. The temperate weather is a perfect setting to be outdoors and witness the trees changing colors, the beautiful pumpkins in front of our neighborhood houses, and catch some blue jays flying by.
This is only a brief glimpse of what is going on within our walls of Afterschool. It is always a pleasure to witness our friends enjoying their time together. If they aren't celebrating their victory in soccer or exploring the new season approaching then they must be doing their reading log and catching up in the new Dog Man book. Once they finish their reading I can promise you they are enjoying their time in our freeze dance. Some will say this might be the best club in the world and others might say this is the best dance club ever.
All I know is that we might have our very own dance group ready to make our debut into America’s Got Talent!
The 3rd-5th grade students are settling into their routines and enjoying their time in clubs. We’ve introduced a new “reading buddies” program for some of our older students who are interested in helping out during the younger group’s reading time. Some of our 4th and 5th graders have been pairing up with our 1st and 2nd graders to read books together and it’s been amazing to see this mentorship take place, and even more amazing to see how much they enjoy making these meaningful connections. Our MetroRock group is having a blast climbing in Everett on Mondays and Rush New England Soccer Club is still a fan favorite. Students in the Art & Spanish Club have been turning the Afterschool room into a fine art gallery, adorning the walls with creative interpretations of Henri Matisse’s Icarus and imaginative self-portraits. Production is well underway for our friends in CinemaKidz, but the details of their superhero films are being kept under wraps to prevent any leaks to rival studios (I’m not at liberty to say whom, but it rhymes with Shmarvel). Get ready to start hearing the Oscar buzz once those teaser trailers drop!
