Introduction
From all of us here at the Healey After School program, we've loved spending the past year with your kids! We have been able to watch them grow, help them learn, and lead them in having such a fun time! We will miss your students over the summer and can't wait to see your students return to the program in the fall. We look forward to a fun-filled last week of school and a great school year next year!
PreK
As the weather has gotten warmer, PreK has been having a blast outside! Students made kindness books and learned the best ways to be kind to one another, even in difficult situations. Students learned how to be friends by doing a how to be friends flower arts and crafts project. Students have continued to learn their numbers and letters in preparation for Kindergarten next year. PreK has had the chance to visit the backlot structure during dismissal, when it is empty of the rest of the After School students, and have some time to their own on the big kids playground!
Alex Walters - SMART:
The students have loved smart club this past session. By this point, we have read a massive amount of fairy tales. Some of our favorites from the past few meetings were King Midas and the Golden Touch, the classic Cinderella, Peter Pan, and the Emperor's New Clothes. As the semester has gone on, Mr. Walters' character voices have improved, and the students have had a blast listening to him read these stories while being able to watch them animated up on the smart board! After the story was read, students participated in discussions regarding the moral of the story and what they learned from it!
Alex Walters - Power Hour: Students have definitely gotten their share of dodgeball this past session. Consistently voted as their favorite game, we have played many different versions of it. For example, last week we played a version of dodgeball where students broke off into teams and each built their own castle with the blue foam blocks in the gym. A game of dodgeball ensued where students tried to get each other out, but also were able to take cover in their castle and try to knock down their opponents' castle at the same time.
Nick Triant - Soccer Club: In soccer club, we learned the basics of the game and worked super hard to understand the importance of teamwork. Most students have played all positions on the field and have been amazing teammates to their friends.
Nick Triant - Art with Fruit: In Art with Fruit, we have used watermelon, pineapple, pears, and strawberries to make different creations. I loved watching the kids take so much pride in making their artwork and then be able to enjoy their healthy snack.
Nick Triant - Aquabeads Club: Aquabeads Club, students have done an amazing job with slowing down and taking their time to make their designs. I was so impressed with some of the creations the kids were able to come up with!
Team Activities: In these last few weeks of Team Activities club, students have been impressively honing their team building skills by reflecting on our own strengths and weaknesses while participating in new games such as frisbee, wiffleball, scavenger hunts, capture the flag, dodgeball, and different types of trust games. We have enjoyed being able to be outside for most of May as the weather has been so nice lately! For our last team activity, students were able to take charge and create their own teams and strategies for the marshmallow building challenge.
Ms. Annie - Outdoor Play Club: For the final weeks of outdoor play club the students are taking charge of our activities. They selected their favorite games that were introduced over the session and have been leading each other in activities like sardines and tigers eye.
Ms. Annie - Coloring and Design Club: Students spent the last few weeks of our session honing their coloring page design skills and practicing their coloring. Some design favorites include summer themed pages including beach scenes and ice cream cones while others continued working from their personal interests. This session our students have created many beautiful coloring pages and designs!
Ms. Annie - Book Club: We wrapped up book club with the last few chapters of the Mysterious Benedict Society. Over some snacks and Italian cookies, students were kept in suspense as the child heroes of the story raced to stop the villain and his mind-controlling device from invading the minds of the world. On the last day of club we finished our novel, and the book club members are excited to read the next books in the Mysterious Benedict Society series on their own

We are in our last month of afterschool at the Brown School. It has been a creative and wild ride this 2023–2024 school year.
We’ve seen some fantastic new clubs and some unrelenting favorites. It truly takes a village to bring in the awesome clubs to our afterschool program.
This year we brought back everyone’s favorites: Lego Challenge, Wreck the Journal, and Outdoor Adventure. Our new clubs, with a surprising twist, Bowling club, World Mythology, and Junior Trivia brought us new adventures.
We did a lot more off site clubs to expand our adventures and open our opportunities. It has brought the kiddos a lot of joy to explore their neighborhood.
Our combination party with the PTA went off without a hitch. We had food from several families, brought to share. The music was on point and the 5th graders were celebrated for their hard work and transition on to 6th grade. We also celebrated Mr. Maguire! He announced his retirement and families and educators came to wish him luck on his next adventures. He was an amazing advocate for our afterschool program and he will be missed!
To close out the end of the year we did a slide show presentation highlighting our favorite moments. We got to watch our adventures to the park, our excitement making slime, and of course the sticky gingerbread making contest.
Families, our Brown School Afterschool Crew wish you all the best and we look forward to seeing you in the 2024-2025 school year. It was a pleasure bringing joy to your kiddos world and we hope that the good feelings carry into the summer. Stay safe and wear sunscreen.

Happy June everyone! It is officially the end of yet another amazing and adventurous school year here at the East Somerville Community Schools Afterschool Program. As always, we thank you all for the support that we receive year-round from all of our families.
Our End Of The Year Sundae Family Celebration was a huge success! Thank you to all of those that donated and were able to join us. Everyone was able to dive into a bowl of ice cream with all types of toppings and flavors of ice cream. We had so much fun with each other and are so happy that we got to celebrate the success of another school year.
We would also like to congratulate our graduating seniors this year, Estefani Medrano, Tashmeer Michele, Destiny Andrade and Deni Matias Martin.
They have been a strong asset in our afterschool community for all students and staff alike. We were pleased and lucky to have strong seniors with us all these years, stepping up whenever needed, coming to work with a positive attitude and so much more!
We will miss them but we also are aware of the successful paths that life has planned for all four of them. Thank you to all of you.
We also want to take a moment to announce to you all that our beloved Janice Pousland will be retiring at the end of this school year. Ms. Janice has been working for Somerville Public Schools for over 20 years and has made an impact on so many of the students lives. We would like to thank her for her many years of service and wish her the best on her new endeavors.
We hope to see you all in the upcoming school year!

Now, as the year is coming to a close, it is time to look back to where we came from, and how we got to where we are today.
We had a busy year, and over that time, the children grew in innumerable ways. Children always seem to grow rapidly from ages four to five and five to six. This year, as in all years, our children had a wide array of challenges to confront.
For example, this year, we spent a lot of time in the cafeteria and the gym, and needed to be flexible about where we would be. Children adjusted to a constantly changing schedule by listening to their teachers and played happily for the most part.
When there were problems, we tried our best to help children handle whatever problems arose. We hope that through our guidance, we left them better equipped to deal with similar situations in the future.
Last year, right at the very end of the year, we welcomed the Winter Hill School Pre-K and Kindergarten classes and the corresponding after-school class. This year we are wishing Winter Hill a fond farewell as they find a new home on Bonair Street.
All in all, it’s been an exciting year. We had our end of the year family event at the very end of May. Please see the photos of the party! It’s great to see happy faces!
We are delighted to have been a part of the life of your child during the past year. We wish both students and parents happiness and success in the future.

It is hard to believe this school year is over. It honestly feels like it flew by. We have had a wonderful year, made lots of memories, and look forward to more next year!
Ms. Alison is having a baby boy in October! The way I told our amazing group of students was with a code that they had to solve and a secret message that read “Ms. Alison is having a baby in October”. Students were so excited when they solved the puzzle and read the message! I wanted to write it here in case some of your children didn’t tell you! Ms Emmaline will take over while I am on my maternity leave! She is wonderful and the program will continue to thrive under her direction 😊
We also want to say goodbye to Mr. Ethan as he embarks on a new journey in his career.
Mr. Ethan has been such a staple in this after school program for the last few years and I know he has made an impact on so many of our students' lives.
We will miss him here at the Kennedy and but we know he’ll come back and visit when he can! Good luck Mr. Ethan!!
Lastly, we wanted to thank all the staff, friends and families who have supported us this past year! We hope you have a fantastic summer!
Love,
Alison, Emmaline, Savannah, Maureen, Laura, Silvana, Emma, Nicole, Kelly, Ethan, Mary Lou, Jolene, and Nicolee!

Hello Families!
Welcome to our June Newsletter!
Well, there you have it, it is officially our last newsletter of the month. It is finally here, The weather is warmer, School is out, and now we can begin our summer vacation! With our students saying goodbye to everyone, and saying hello to the the flying birds at the beach,
Our Prek kiddos have been loving the year, and cannot wait to come back next year as Kindergartens. Our friends have been enjoying the last few weeks of school, By taking turns showing off their dance skills, making their own bubbles using magic, and lastly showing off their show & tell. For our last goodbye, we decided to enjoy a huge game of soccer, and dance to Shakira world cup anthem. We were able to show off our skills and show everyone our favorite team.
This will be the last time you read this for the year. Our K-2 friends had a blast this year. With so much going on, Music videos being created, soccer being taught by Lionel Messi, Combing basket and chess, and even bowling, they have done it all. Our friends have grown so much that they are ready for the summer and ready to become highschoolers, (in about 6-8 more years that is). Our kiddos learned so much this year, its only fair they have a great end of the year party and amazing summer. We cannot wait to see them next year and see how much they grew over the break!
It’s hard to believe we’ve got another school year behind us–it seems like just yesterday we were getting to know our classmates and settling into our routines, but time flies when you’re having fun, and the 3rd-6th sure did have fun this year. The last month of the school year is loaded with awesome activities and special celebrations, from book fairs to graduations, field trips to field days, and even Afterschool’s very own End-Of-The-Year Celebration extravaganza, where we invite families to join in on the fun. The end of the year invites the opportunity to reflect and remember that school isn’t just about spending time in the classroom, and we can learn and grow alongside each other by setting time aside to let loose and play. We hope everyone has an amazing and restful summer, and we look forward to coming together again in the Fall for another awesome year!
