Every March, students around the globe celebrate the benefits of Social Emotional Learning on SEL day, which fell on March 8th. This year’s theme was “Today's Students, Tomorrow’s Leaders'' to recognize the importance SEL plays in promoting healthy and comprehensive growth and development. Research has shown that SEL improves prosocial behaviors such as kindness and empathy, fosters positive relationships and problem-solving among peers, and reduces stress and depression. It also enhances productive attitudes toward school and improves academic performance and achievement. All of these qualities prepare our students for a bright future and we at Community Schools are happy to be a part of this journey as we endorse, teach, and support SEL at all of our sites!

Pre-K (Ms. Keala)

 Aloha Ohanas,

I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine upon entering Spring. Some of our Group 1 students joined us for February vacation and had a blast meeting new friends and attending fun field trips. This past month, Pre-K learned about the life cycles of turtles, played weather games, and continued to learn about rainbows. As always, teachers and students practiced communicating with respect and kindness. Our little learners will learn through spring-themed activities this upcoming month. Stay Safe and happy.

Me Ke Aloha,

Ms. Keala

K-2nd grade (Ms. Sana, Ms. Ileana, Ms. Ana, & Ms. Lauren):

Ms. Sana- Arts and Crafts Club for kids is an exciting place where creativity thrives! We offer various materials including paint, foam sheets, and vibrant paper to inspire their artistic activities. Our engaging projects range from crafting Paper Plate Winter Hats to designing Paper Mittens, creating Hot Cocoa Mugs, and making Cotton Ball Penguins. It's a club where imaginations flourish as children explore their creativity, all while having a blast!

Ms. Brianna- In Gym Games, the kids have had so much fun being active and participating in a variety of physical activities. We always start out the club with warm ups and stretching like jumping jacks, arm circles, sit ups, squats and various stretches. Then we play a fun game to warm up our bodies such as fishy-fishy, Mr. Fox, or four corners. For the main activity we alternate between different sport themed activities like soccer, basketball, capture the flag or kickball. Some kids have never played kickball or basketball before so we always go over the basic rules and steps on how it works. We learned how to run the bases and also developed basketball skills like dribbling & passing the ball. It has been a blast!

3rd-5th (Ms. Etta):

This month Group 4 has been enjoying more time outside as the weather warms up and the sunlight lasts longer.  Soccer is the game of choice for many students and the matches are quite spirited! This week is also the last week of session 2 clubs and we have been having lots of fun.

We finished off Knots and Beads and Strings, Oh My! with string games, such as Cats Cradle, as well as making pompoms.  The Cats Cradle is a two person string game that was quite challenging to learn but very rewarding and satisfying to play. The single person string games were also challenging and exciting to learn, especially with the wide variety of shapes and objects that could be created. After the string games we started making pom-poms. We were able to wrap a few layers of yarn before the club ended. The pom-poms will be very fluffy and cute when they are finished.

In Lego Building, our last theme was electronic devices and we ended up making items for a news film crew. We then used our lego equipment to bring the latest news to our fellow lego building audience.  All of the lego creations throughout this club have been impressive and creative work.

In Fancy Folds we made some origami cat box fidget toys, hexaflexagons, and on our last day the students made whatever they could think of with paper. The cat box fidget toys were basically folded paper boxes on folded paper springs, and the students especially enjoyed folding and playing with the springs!  The hexaflexagons are a single strip of paper folded into nine triangles that are then folded into a hexagon. This hexagon can then be folded and flipped to reveal three different flat sides in a never-ending cycle.  Hexaflexagons are quite mesmerizing and fun to play with!

Each club offered a different kind of fun, and we are all looking forward to the next session of clubs and the rest of the school year!

Hello families, and happy Spring!

This month we wrapped up our winter session of clubs and began our final session of clubs for the year. We had some unseasonably warm days which we enjoyed to the fullest on both our playgrounds. Staff are excited for this next round of clubs and wanted to share how we closed out session 2. Read below for all the fun!

Ms. Suri:

Friends in PreK continued working their way through the alphabet with more art and STEM related activities. We worked on the letters G, S, A and I. We made goldfish and guitars and enjoyed our pretend band. For S we made beautiful stars, snakes and some creepy crawling spiders. Our letter A was turned into an airplane and students spent the afternoon flying their planes around the classroom with conversations around where they were taking a vacation! We made ice cream cones and our very own tropical islands. Students explored with play-doh and blocks which continues to be a favorite among all the students for free choice time.

Mr.T:

It has been an absolute blast to work with all of my students in Session Two! I greatly enjoyed being able to run Basketball Club and introduce the kids to the fundamentals of my favorite sport! They did a masterful job of displaying teamwork and being patient with one another. Next session, I will be teaching Soccer Club, another one of my favorite sports.

In Aquabeads Club, most students were able to bring home one of their own designs at least three times over the course of the session. They worked so hard, and I look forward to continuing this club into the next session.

Lastly, in Mr. T Master of Games club, we got to spend loads of time together learning new games and having fun with friends. I cannot wait to bring back Art with Fruit club next session, as I know it is a fan favorite (and one of mine, too).

Mr.Walters:

K-2 Gym Class Heroes: The younger kids have definitely maximized their movement this session in Gym Class Heroes. Each meeting we warmed up with the scream game, which gets some physical energy and some of those pent up screams out. Fishy Fishy Cross My Ocean, Zookeepers, Castles and Dragons, Castleball, Star Wars Dodgeball, Bowling Pin Dodgeball, Scrabble and various types of tag were our favorite activities. I’m happy to say that the kids were able to have a lot of fun and get some good exercise while also working on their ability to be part of a team, share, and be good sports all at the same time!

3-6 Gym Class Heroes: The older kids have had a blast this session in Gym Class Heroes. They’ve especially loved dodgeball, so we’ve played every single version of dodgeball you could possibly think of! Classic Dodgeball, Castleball, Free the Prisoners, Scrabble, and Bowling Pin Dodgeball were our favorites. Other games we’ve especially enjoyed were Pac Man Tag, 3 Ball, Rainbow Tag and Capture the Flag. I’m proud to say that students in this club not only had a lot of fun and got that physical energy out, but developed their abilities to work together as a team and be a good sport at the same time.

K-2 Game Show Club: The younger kids have really enjoyed their time in Game Show Club this session. They’ve done their favorite dance moves in So You Think You Can Dance, sang along with their favorite songs in American Idol, teamed up to go head to head with other students in the class on various topics like kid’s movies, animals and candy in our most popular game Jeopardy, and even beat Mr. Walters and Mr. Chris in Family Feud! Students loved taking part in the different activities and got to see dances, hear songs, learn facts, and work on their performance and ability to work together as a team all at the same time.

Miss Annie:

Book Club

As we continue reading the Candy Shop War, students have enjoyed getting to know the characters and the developing story. As we read out loud, there is room for impromptu conversations about the plot, queries about what could happen next, and discussions of our favorite magical candy in between. Book club members are also encouraged to bring their own book for individual reading, and time is given to continue reading stories of their choosing in addition to the group reading we do.

Yoga club

Students in this club have been honing their yoga skills and poses as we practice foundational yoga poses and breathing exercises each week. Beginning each session with a breathing activity to release personal stressors and closing with each student picking their favorite pose and leading us through it, we are focusing on the benefits of practicing yoga as an individual and with a group of peers. Some of the students favorite poses to learn and practice include peaceful warrior, candlestick, and crow.

Crafts club

Crafts club welcomed Spring with paper flowers, made by cutting and rolling colored paper and glueing the ends to form spiraled spring bouquets. Once we finish the group craft, students are encouraged to make more of the same independently or to choose their own creative venture, including freely drawing and coloring, designing mini paper bookmarks, or making personal paper crafts. For our final craft of the session, students are making penny fidget spinners, where they combine cut cardboard, individually designed cover paper, and a penny to make their own spinning toy.

Session two flew right by! Brown School is ready to “spring” into March with some new clubs! We are very much looking forward to the longer days and more time outside! This club session was jam-packed with great activities and fun! Let’s highlight a few as we say goodbye to Session Two!

First up is MetroRock; Mrs. Phillips joined a group of kiddos every week as they tackled the sport of rock climbing! It was joyous to see students from grades third through fifth work together and encourage one another to “keep swimming” to reach the top! Bouldering is the warm-up activity in every class and students are always so eager to try a new set of “rocks.” On one of the bouldering boulders, climbers have the ability to challenge themselves to climb to the very top. When students make it, they stand and love to wave at the cheering crowd of their peers from below! Another activity that the students seemed to get great joy from was the obstacle course. The mini one and the big one!

K-2 continued to let their imagination and creativity soar during these winter months! From chalk art to large group collaborations! One example, in Roll to Build Club, the students roll dice to see how many Lego pieces they can add to their designs each week. A group of second graders decided to work together and collaborate on one big build! As seen in the photo, students designed the Titanic to build. If you look closely, they included the “Italian Catacombs” in the ocean, an octopus arm to collect treasure and there even was an iceberg that had a staircase and a tomb.

Another activity that the K-2 students love is reading a story and creating art inspired by what they read! Another activity that was favored this session was the collaboration art pieces that came together when each student finished their own. For example, Ms. Ashley’s Artist Collaboration Club students “channeled” their inner Keith Haring to create a masterpiece!

Fridays during this session were some of the “chillest” time grades 3-5 spent together. With the winter weather, students and teachers took the time to get to know each other better through indoor games and group reading/writing sessions. It has been nice to have a balance between whole group activities throughout the week to slower-paced activities, and the students seemed to enjoy it as well!

K-2 aren’t the only ones who were creative this wintery season! 3-5 students had a club in session two dedicated to famous artists around the world! One of the artists that the students studied was Yayoi Kusama, who is known for pop art! Another artist was Van Gough, where the students experimented with paint colors!

In 3D Art, led by Mr. Kasey, students finished the final installment of their becorns! The Becorn project was a three-class project where students used natural materials from the outdoors to create their very own “Becorn” and make it come to life. When their Becorns were finished, we took them out into the community and took photos to then use in a story.

As you can see, lots of fun and learning was had even with the scarce amount of snow and daylight. Students and teachers are looking forward to the longer daylight hours and warmer weather! We see plenty of community park days in our future!! Session 3 clubs have been finalized and we can’t wait to start with a refreshing schedule! Some of the clubs we’re looking forward to are: Soccer Club, Cinema Kidz, Galaxy Club, Wreck the Journal, Bowling Club, Magical Arts, World Mythology and Save the Earth!

 Happy March!

Session Two of the clubs has ended, and we have made many memories of our program.

All of our clubs have been enjoying end-of-session activities. As a program, we celebrated by enjoying popsicles with friends and peers. We appreciate all the students’ efforts in the clubs and homerooms for Session Two. From our Pre-K-2nd, I am Art & Crafts, Lego Imagination, Intro Computers, NE Soccer clubs to our 3-7th, The students in rock climbing finished strong with the extensive ropes course! Engineering, Ping pong, board games, and building wave and danger wizards give our students a holistic experience! March has been filled with warm and cold weather and sunny and rainy days. However, our student spirits kept East Somerville after school warm and welcoming.

1st-grade students are using their creativity to create their own stories through inspiration from the Elephant & Piggie series. It has been a big hit in the classroom; they all love picking up a good book following the series during reading time. The student's own book followed the story of “Don’t let Mr. Mario finish this book” and personified their own characters to take home and share with their families. Many of them let us know that their favorite part of creating their own story was to add characters and draw them in. It was a lively month in the classroom for them! With the popularity of our computer lab rising, our 2nd grade students are taking advantage of the technology and focusing on strengthening their coding and typing skills using different programs like Code Monkey and Rapid Typing. To have some fun, they are also creating their very own surprise bags, and creating rainbows with fruit loops and marshmallows.

Pre-K and K students are continuing to explore the alphabet and the sounds by creating letter puppets and celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss by reading some of his classic stories including ‘If I Ran the Zoo,  ‘If I Ran the Circus, ‘The Cat in the Hat, and ‘Green Eggs and Ham, as well as talking about their favorite stories and why, they will make their own ‘Cat in the Hat’ and ‘Green Eggs and Ham plate dinner. March is shaping up to be a wonderful adventure.

Our older students are continuing to grow and show responsibility in the after-school space. They complete homework and 20 minutes of reading each day before playing games with their friends and are continually challenged to create new things and ideas in clubs and challenge themselves with different ways to make new harder structures with Plus plus block building. They love trading Pokémon cards and building Lego structures together but also remain very active in gym games, waffle ball, basketball, and soccer games. Several of our students have even taught their own soccer techniques lessons and create soccer games

Capuano March 2024 Newsletter

March is a month of change. The length of the day is increasing at the fastest rate of the entire year. Daylight savings start at the same time as light later, adding to the feeling of change. The weather is also getting warmer, but is very changeable. At the Capuano, classes have been doing activities centered around Daylight Savings, Weather, Spring, Farm Animals, Cooperative Games, Self Help, and, of course, Saint Patrick’s Day.

Classes have read books like On the Same Day in March: A Tour of the World’s Weather, Winnie the Pooh Tells Time, It’s Spring, Froggy Gets Dressed, and The Cow Who Clucked. Projects related to the readings have included “A rainbow is…,” rainbow necklaces, “I’m lucky because,” “Race to the Treasure!”, paper plate flowers, tissue paper flowers, cherry blossom art, dress Froggy, and all kinds of farm animal crafts. We also had lots of discussions about feelings, how to deal with big feelings, what it means to be kind, and how to solve problems with your friends.

The children play and have fun time too – children build fantasy toys with our manipulatives during choice time at the beginning and end of the day, and classes are getting outside more and more frequently.

March is passing by. By the time you read this, Spring will already be here!

Hello everyone,

It is so hard to believe that this school year is almost over! Session 3 is about to start and session 2 has been so much fun. Just some reminders before we get into the fun stuff!

Pre-K News

As the seasons start changing and winter makes way for spring, our pre-k friends are learning about the weather. In our weather unit, we have learned about the different kinds of clouds, how snow and rain forms, and the definitions of various weather words (cold/warm front, air pressure, etc.). We even made our own weather wheels like the one on our classroom board to help us keep track of what today's weather is. This is one of our favorite units to do and we're so happy our friends enjoyed it as much as we did!

 Mr. Ethan’s Clubs

It has been a great start to 2024 for our After School clubs! Gym Class Heroes has seen new heights of competition during some epic soccer matches and down-to-the-wire games of kickball. We've also mixed in new variations of dodgeball and other fan-favorite games to keep things fresh. In World Explorers Club, we've completed some fun culturally inspired crafts like DIY Mosaics and virtually traveled the globe in class games of Geoguesser and Worldle. In Trivia Club, we've tested our knowledge and skills in Jeopardy and Pictionary games, and even our third graders have proven they're "smarter than a fifth grader" through the classic game show format. Magic the Gathering club has continued to be a fan favorite as the students improve their skills and decks week by week. This coming week they'll face the ultimate test as they battle it out in our final tournament of the session. Finally, Chess club has been a great learning experience as students continue to practice, learning powerful opening and closing strategies to get the upper hand on their opponents. With a new session and new clubs starting soon, we're all excited for what the rest of the School year has in store!

Ms. Laura’s Clubs:

Laura's clubs have been having fun finding out about the ocean, climate change and visiting interesting places. They have been surprising after school students, teachers and friends with homemade things!

Newspaper Club:

The newspaper club has been very busy these past few weeks as we prepare for the release of our very first After School newspaper, The After School Gazette! These young journalists and comic artists have put in a lot of work to make this idea come to life. They have been interviewing, observing, sketching, and writing. I am very proud of the hard work they have put in, and we are excited to share what we have made with the After School community.

Veggie Circus:

The students in the veggie circus have worked hard learning different circus skills while also talking about healthy vegetables and a healthy lifestyle. They had the pleasure of performing for some parents and many other friends in After School this week. It was great to see what they have learned this session! Maybe some of them will even want to go to circus school!

Ms. Silvana’s Clubs

Hi Everyone! Happy to say that the clubs we had were successful but sad they are done! Students got to improve their skills of folding and making lots and lots of shapes in the origami club. Our last origami was a beautiful swan 🦢 and a heart ❤️! In life skills club we did trivia about famous people, the picture of who is on different dollar bills! Students compared different sizes and types of coins too! Learning the value of the money and managing them is not easy as may seem but students impressed the teachers with their comments and suggestions. Around the world club had our last hour focused on Greece and Albania. We talked about their traditions and learned about their language too! We enjoyed some simple dancing and fruit stripe at the end of the day!

As always, please let us know if you have any questions, etc. We are looking forward to ending this school year on a high note!

Hi Wonderful Families!

As we embrace the beauty of spring approaching, we extend a warm welcome to the new after school session. This session we focus on renewal, growth, and exciting possibilities for our students. While the promise of warmer days is on the horizon, we kindly remind you to send your children to school with jackets, as the spring weather can still be quite cool. Please stay tuned for important updates and information through our emails and reminder app. Here's to a season filled with joy, learning, and shared moments.

Pre-K/Kindergarten

This month our Pre-K and Kindergarten have dived into the vibrant world of farm life. They joyously sang catchy tunes, bringing the farm to life with each verse, while exploring stories such as "Ms. Wishy Washy's Farm" to spark their imagination. They engaged in creative crafts such as cotton ball lambs, constructing barns with recycled materials and using puffy paint to depict their favorite farm animals. So much sensory fun!

Grades 1st-2nd

As the new session approaches we are saying goodbye to winter and hello to spring in all its glory. The first and second graders have had a blast in clubs such as mini movers. They have been working very hard learning the choreography to Matilda's song “Naughty” and they have learned all the steps and got the chance to perform for all their friends and teachers! In buildwave kids are challenged through building sculptures of animals, landscapes, and nature using a variety of building blocks while being timed. Our staff and students alike are excited to incorporate

Grades 3rd-6th

Our 3rd-5th students eagerly await Fridays, not just for the approaching weekend but for the coveted computer time they've earned through their hard work during the week. The excitement is contagious, and their faces light up with joy as they dive into educational games and creative projects on the screen. With the upcoming arrival of spring, the promise of playing outside adds an extra layer of enthusiasm to the atmosphere. The classroom is abuzz with plans for outdoor activities, from games and sports to nature walks. This session has been a whirlwind of energy, as we've packed our days with a perfect blend of physical activities and engaging art projects. The combination of learning, play, and creativity has created a vibrant and dynamic learning environment, fostering both academic growth and a sense of joy in our classroom community.

Hello Families!

Welcome to our March Newsletter!

We are almost at the finish line, families and Friends! With only 3 months left of the school year, our friends cannot wait for the summer. With the sun coming out and warmer weather approaching we have been enjoying our time outside. With session 3 kicking off our students have been thrilled and ready to have fun all session.

Let's give a round of applause to our PreK friends! They've been having an amazing time at school, filled with fun and learning alongside their teachers. With the weather being so nice lately, our little ones have been thoroughly enjoying their time outside. They've been learning new games, practicing yoga, and even playing tag with their teachers! During our yoga sessions, they've been working on their stretches and mastering poses like the chair pose, tree pose, and hands to toe pose. Some of us teachers have even been a tad jealous of their flexibility, but we're learning from them too. When we're not busy with yoga or singing along to "The Wheels on the Bus," we're diving into our circle reading time. This week, we delved into the concept of the "Magical Yet." We've learned that we all have a magic friend inside us called The Magical Yet. It helps us deal with frustration about things we can't do "yet." With practice, The Magical Yet teaches us to grow and learn. To celebrate this wonderful concept, our students got creative and made potions in school to share their Magical Yet with each other. It's been a heartwarming experience witnessing their enthusiasm.

All right, now welcome to the newsletter. It's our K-2 grades! We bid farewell to session 2 and eagerly anticipate the start of session 3. Our students are buzzing with excitement as new clubs are introduced for afterschool activities, alongside the return of familiar favorites. One such returning club is Parkour, where our kids are honing their jumping skills and scaling walls, feeling like real-life superheroes ready to defend our school. Their strength and agility are truly remarkable! In Kickball, our students are not only learning the game but also grasping the importance of healthy competition and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship, guided by Ms. Gianna. And yes, if you haven't heard, they've been giving the teachers a run for their money lately! It seems there's something extraordinary happening, with our Kindergarten students hitting home runs left and right. But that's not all! We've discovered some hidden talents among our students as well. In our new club, Chess, Checkers, & Basketballs, we've witnessed some intense matches with grandmaster-level moves and impeccable shots. Our kids are truly impressing us every day!

The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and new clubs for 3rd-6th grade are here for Session Three! In Blooms & Brushes, the springtime flowers are our muses as we immerse ourselves in the world of art and the warmth of the sun. In the Television Time Travelers Club, the small screen sparks big adventures, and we look to classic TV shows to ignite critical thinking and explore visual media as a tool for learning. MetroRock is back! Grab your bouldering buddy and make Spiderman look like an amateur! Speaking of bouncing off the walls, Parkour is back, too, with a new playground structure to add to the challenge of moving as creatively as possible. We’re so excited to spend more and more time outdoors and find new ways to get our energy out every day.
