Word of the Week: Friendship
Hollywood
East: This week we are swimming with the sharks! Of course our show featuring many silly sea creatures, would be lacking if we didn't have the imfamous song...ya'll know what we're talking about. Our performance on Friday will be a whale of a time. This year we are introducing TALENT show. One group will feature their awesome talents on stage. By the end of the summer all our kids would have an opportuntity to express themselves through, dance, jokes, skits, magic, and puppets.
Hollywood is a unique specialist activity that brings kiddos to the stage. We help build their confidence in expressing themselves. Whether we get on stage or not, we will discover inner creative spirit.
Come watch us every Friday at 3:10!
Healey: 🎭 Lights, Camera, Action! 🎭
We are the HOLLYWOOD Drama Club, and this week we’re making waves with a special performance for families and friends—inspired by Shark & Ocean Life Week! 🌊🦈
Get ready for singing, storytelling, jokes, and so much more as our talented kids take the stage. Our young performers, along with dedicated staff, have worked hard to bring this show to life—creating costumes, building props, and working together every step of the way to make our underwater vision a reality.
You won’t want to miss this unforgettable show—see you there! 🎬✨
East: This week in Destination Imagination, we dove right into Shark Week with a fin-tastic lineup of creative activities!
Campers learned about different types of sharks while making their own 3D pop-up sharks and shark fortune tellers. They also crafted shark-themed bracelets to wear and brought the fun full circle with a round of exciting shark BINGO.
We're excited to kick off the summer with these fun activities and can't wait to see what the rest of camp holds for us!
Destination Imagination
Healey: The summer is off to a giant splash with the theme Shark Week and More. In Destination Imagination, we are taking a bite out of art (with bits of science and morality thrown into the meal) drawing hammerhead sharks, killer whales, and undersea volcanoes.
This week is mainly about drawing skills, but has multiple components. Students watch a short (2-3 minute) fun video that secretly contains a moral lesson and contains inspirational images of the subject matter for the day. For example, Snail Helps Save Whale has bits of science about snails and whales, but more importantly has a message about people helping others in need, and at the same time, the nature of the video creates buy-in for the students. Next, Students watch a science video about the subject of the day, for example on the day that we drew hammerhead sharks, we watched a 5 minute national geographic kids video about sharks. Last, we draw our subject of the day followed by a bit of time to complete our drawings or choose from art and or sensory experiences (mainly tactile in the form of modeling clay) which the students seem to really enjoy.
Unlike many arts and crafts kinds of classes, we concentrate on process over product, so few examples of the work from Destination Imagination may make it home, but I assure you that students are learning and growing. In fact, I see progress in the students who have been to my class for the past few years as compared to when those students started and as compared to the students of the same age from a few years ago.
STEAM
East: Hi everyone!
Welcome to the Adventure Summer Program 2025. We are so excited to start a fun summer. In STEAM class, we have been having fun learning about everything in the ocean. We have been doing different art and science activities this week. We used salt and water colors to make salt art. Students really enjoyed this! We also made a jellyfish out of paper plates, modge podge, and tissue paper. This was a fun activity to do, as many of the students had never used modge podge (which is like glue). We’re looking forward to more fun things every week this summer!
Healey: Hi everyone! My name is Ms. Elizabeth and I am so excited to teach STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) again this summer! We are going to do experiments, use technology, engineer structures, and more!
Each week’s activities will relate to the weekly theme. This week the theme is Shark Week! In STEAM we became biologists, learning about sharks and their many adaptations to their environments. Students then used this information to invent new species of sharks. We also learned about hydrothermal vents, which are essentially underwater volcanoes. We then did experiments to create our own model volcanos using yeast, soap, and hydrogen peroxide! Finally, we learned about melting glaciers and did small scale experiments on how fast ice can melt. Students were also invited to make art out of their melting ice.
We are looking forward to continuing our STEAM explorations next week!
East: With the Women's Euro Cup and the Club World Cup happening, we thought it was only right for us to start our camp with some soccer. Every group was able to bring their best soccer skills out! Focusing on teamwork, passing, control, and shooting- everyone had lots of fun. We wrapped up our week through participating in scrimmages, bringing our best skills out. It's been a fun time during Just Do It in week 1, see you all again in Week 2!
Just Do It
Healey: In Just Do It, we kicked off the week with tons of energy and fun! We introduced volleyball to our kiddos but with a twist. From practicing their serves to mastering one-hand touches, our friends even brought beach volleyball vibes right into the gym.
Everyone has been having a blast, and just like that, Week One is officially in the books!
To cap it all off, Friday’s tradition continued strong with our LIT vs. Staff game. This week, the teachers stayed undefeated in volleyball maybe we’re Olympic-bound after all
LIT's - Healey
The LITs have been having a great first week of summer camp. On Monday, we started the day with an icebreaker to introduce everyone - two truths and a lie. We broke the ice a little bit and learned all of each other's names and guessed each person's lie - I was happy to see a few students enthusiastically step up and get the other students interested in playing the game. After that, we headed outside to take a look at the Community Garden. We will be taking care of the garden this summer as a community service project and visiting it every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to clean up trash, water the plants, weed the garden, and maybe plant some new stuff! We spent some time outside on the backlot playground and at the basketball courts and swings on the tot lot before gym time and lunch. We were ready to walk down to the Latta Brothers Memorial Pool at Foss Park in the afternoon, but unfortunately there was an issue with the chlorine levels so we skipped that. We played a massive game of dodgeball in the gym instead. On Tuesday, we went to "In The Game" in Peabody with the rest of the camp. The students loved the massive arcade, and won some great prizes. On Wednesday, we had quite a day. We ate an early lunch in the classroom and then we walked down to the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse at the Mystic River. For our educational/team building field trip this week we took a kayak trip down the Mystic River. The students all went in double kayaks. They received a lesson from staff on the two different roles, the best ways to turn, and how to gain speed in the kayaks, because the two person kayaks are harder than they look! The students worked together well to travel a good distance down the river for an hour and a half. We were sad to have to cancel our trip to Nahant Beach on Thursday, but on Friday, we played an icebreaker jeopardy game where the answers are a different student in our class, played against the staff in the LIT Games, and then got another trip into the pool in the afternoon and watched the camp show.
Counselor's Corner
East: First Week in Full Swing – We’re So Happy You’re Here!
This week in Counselor’s Corner, we dove into the Zones of Regulation—a fun and helpful way for us to recognize and manage our feelings. We explored how different emotions fall into different “zones” (like blue for sad, red for mad, green for calm, and yellow for silly or nervous), and how we can use smart strategies to stay in control and feel our best.
To bring the zones to life, we got creative and drew our very own emoji faces to match each zone—some were super silly, and some really expressive! We talked about what each zone feels like and what we can do to help ourselves shift to a more comfortable place when we need to. The grand finale? A silly string! We each got one to remind us that even when things get wild, we’ve got the tools to keep ourselves “in check” and have fun the safe and respectful way.
We’re just getting started, and we can already tell it’s going to be a great summer of learning, growing, and lots of laughter!
Healey: Welcome to Summer Adventure Camp 2025 and to Counselor’s Corner at the Healey with Miss Dana! We are happy going “Trailblazing” with your kiddos and hope you all enjoyed our first week together.
In Counselor’s Corner this summer, we will be focusing on Friendship. Every week, we will learn about the benefits of friendship and the ways we can learn to be good friends – to each other, to our community, to our world, and to ourselves. Since “Shark Week and More” was our camp theme this week, we found out that dolphins are known to form long-lasting friendships with other dolphins just like we do - through shared interests, mutual benefit, and comradery. It was exciting for the kids to learn that dolphins even use specific individual calls as “names” to identify themselves and remember friends!
We can’t wait to continue our friendship journey in Week 2! Please ask your children to talk with you about what they are learning 😊
