The school library serves as a point of voluntary access to information, ideas, and as a learning laboratory for students as they acquire critical thinking skills. School librarians select materials in consultation with teachers using standard professional school library review sources to identify resources that are appropriate for the varied interests, abilities, learning styles, and maturity levels of the students served. Considering the diverse backgrounds and points of view represented in the pluralistic society served by the public school, individuals may occasionally object to materials available through the school library. Upon parental request, the school librarian will work with individual parents to guide their children to books and resources that align with their family values.
March is EVERYBODY READS month in the city of Sioux Falls!
The Sioux Falls School District is excited to partner with Siouxland Libraries, Augustana Mikkelsen Library, and the University of Sioux Falls Norman B. Mears Library to encourage reading across our communities from March 1–31, 2026. Also participating are the Tri-Valley School District, Our Savior’s Lutheran Community Library, Sylvan Learning, and REACH Literacy. If you want to participate, adults can have their books tracked at any of the public libraries in Sioux Falls.
This year’s theme, Tales on the Trails, invites readers to explore the state of South Dakota by adding a trail marker to our displays for each book they read. Our goal is 500,000 books–and for reaching that goal, a donation will be made to REACH Literacy! REACH Literacy is a local nonprofit that provides literacy instruction and meaningful reading experiences for both adult and youth learners each year.
At PHMS, students are being encouraged to read at least one book - whether that's a traditional chapter book, graphic novel, audiobook, or picture book to help us reach the city-wide goal. Each week 15 students who participate will be randomly selected to win a prize. Please encourage your child to read and participate. We know there are many benefits to EVERYBODY reading, including:
Strengthening brain activity
Building communication skills
Expanding your world = learning about new places, people, and events
Becoming intellectually sound - the more you read, the more you know
Lowering stress
Increasing empathy
