You are to help supervise students at all assemblies. Sit strategically in order to increase respect and decrease distractions and interruptions. Move as needed to help manage student behavior.
Classes will take place during the morning with some interruptions for the bands to practice.
You are to help supervise students before and during the parade. You are not required to help with building floats or supervision of that activity. As soon as all students have left the building after the parade, you are also free to leave.
Feel free to participate with the dress-up days with appropriate attire and with any pep rallies. This helps form connections with students and allows them to see you as more approachable.
You will unintentionally be held to a slightly higher standard. Do your best to remain professional at all times. Set boundaries with different types of relationships (parent, student, coach, etc.) to protect yourself, the other person, and the school. Know that the school will typically follow the path that benefits them or that of least resistance. Use funds appropriately and efficiently, keeping good records and submitting the correct paperwork. If your group requires fundraising, you will supervise that and fill out any required paperwork.
When preparing for a substitute teacher, you should have a generic folder or binder that contains the following information about your classes:
-rosters
-seating charts
-any emergency medical issues like diabetes or severe allergies like peanuts
-emergency plan for fire, tornado, lockdown, etc.
-daily schedule
-at least one day of emergency sub plans with copies
This folder should be easily visible in your classroom in case of an emergency absence, so an administrator or teacher can easily find it.
If you know you are going to be absent, you should prepare something for each class that the students can do with minimal guidance from the substitute teacher. Try to keep study halls to a minimum. Make sure you have enough copies, plus one or two extras, for all the students. If the sub is going to lead a lesson or activity, explain in full detail what your expectations are and how the activity should go. They might not follow it exactly if they feel comfortable with the lesson, but other subs might need the extra details. Many times you do not know who your sub is going to be, so being overprepared is better than underprepared.
Below is an example of a sub plan for a specific day.
