Natural Helpers are a peer-to-peer support program where trained students act as a listening ear and support system for their peers, helping them navigate challenges by connecting them with appropriate adult resources when needed. Natural Helpers are natural leaders who are approachable and supportive, and the program trains these students in communication and listening skills to be more effective helpers.
Peer support: Members provide a safe space for fellow students to talk about their struggles, understanding that sometimes it is easier to talk to peers than adults.
Skill development: Students are trained in skills like active listening, communication, and self-care, as well as learning to recognize situations that require professional help.
Connection to resources: A key function is to guide peers to trusted adults and other resources within the school and community, especially for serious issues like substance abuse or mental health concerns.
Identification: Students are often identified for the program through an anonymous school-wide survey to ensure a cross-section of the student body is represented.
Activities: Beyond one-on-one support, NH may engage in activities like community projects, school-wide wellness initiatives, and fundraising to support their efforts.
