YEARBOOK JOURNALISM 575051 Open to: Grade 10, 11, 12 (½ Credit) Prerequisite: None
In this course, skills designed for yearbook production are taught. Students study newswriting, graphics, layout, headline writing, and feature writing. Computer skills for use in connection with the yearbook are taught and lab work on actual yearbook pages is completed. Staff members of the Gumbo are urged to take this course. Students must have strong writing and grammar skills. 8th graders wishing to enroll in this course for their 9 th grade year, will need to have their registration sheet signed by their 8 th grade Language Arts teacher, verifying that their grammar/writing skills are sufficient.
ADVANCED YEARBOOK JOURNALISM 575052 Open to: Grades 10, 11, 12 (½ Credit)
Prerequisite: Earn an A in Yearbook Journalism and Instructor Approval
In this course, skills designed for yearbook production are taught. Students will use journalism skills in newswriting, graphics, layout, headline writing, and feature writing. Computer skills and the ability to use the online production program are required. This course is designed for returning yearbook staff members who will create and edit the Gumbo. Students must have their registration sheet signed by the course instructor to be able to enroll.

In this class, students will use all of their academic skills in a real-world context. Writing, design, business, technology and communication combine for a uniquely beneficial class that yields skills necessary for success in college and beyond.
Multidisciplinary // In this 21st century, cross curricular, project-based class, students work collaboratively by using technology such as digital cameras, photo editing software and Adobe InDesign or online design software to digitally produce a yearbook. Students use writing skills, communication skills and creativity to tell the story of the school community and peers in an engaging way. Students demonstrate knowledge of graphic design and think creatively when organizing information within the yearbook. In this college and career ready course, students think critically to meet deadlines, track to goals and utilize multimedia to market and disseminate information that aligns with and models an actual business.
