Vinyl Crafts

What is a Cricut?

You can think of a Cricut machine like a printer – but instead of printing an image onto a piece of paper, it cuts a shape out of a sheet of paper or vinyl.

When you open up a Cricut machine, you’ll see a small blade that moves around on a carriage to cut the design you’ve chosen. The fine-point blade is like a miniature X-acto knife that can cut even the most delicate and intricate shapes.

Best file type for Cricut: .svg files with a transparent background

Our Cricut Maker uses the Cricut Design Studio software. This software is not available online, so we recommend designing in Canva and importing your image into the Cricut Design Studio. SVG files with a transparent background work best!

If you want to explore the pre-made images, logos, and designs in the Cricut Design Studio come by the lab! We would love to help you!

What designs will work?

Designing a shirt or decal that is compatible with a vinyl cutting machine can be tricky at first. Full color images like a picture of your favorite pet won't work. However, you could make a solid outline of your pet with it's name in bold solid letters underneath! Solid, one color shapes and letters work the best. Basic lines and outlines work too. Try to avoid super thin fonts and shapes as well- the thicker the better!
