In my opinion as a senior high school student, homework is a waste. Most students put off homework, making it irrelevant to their learning. If a teacher has a solid lesson plan and knows how to keep their class engaged and focused on the activity, then there's no use for homework.
On the other hand, if class is boring, it's up to to us as students to try to be busy and centered in our work. But school should be an environment where kids want to learn and enjoy it. If a teacher's class is lacking excitement, good luck with trying to get students to do their homework!
From my perspective I feel school should be a place where kids want to come to and learn. You can't have that if a teacher struggles to make their class interesting.
David Hoag, a senior at Konawaena High School, agreed, saying: “I think homework's a waste because some people can't do it. Some kids, they go home and they don't have the materials. Also, with online stuff, they may not have wifi or a computer that works.”
What should teachers do instead of assigning homework? They can prioritize putting together a good lesson plan whilst also interacting with their class and getting them involved.
According to Hoag: “Teachers could explain the work a little better and do things that are more valuable to students. They could also help with the work a little more instead of just giving it to them and (expecting them to) do it on their own.”
What's more, teachers at Konawaena should focus on becoming a role model to students: someone who helps and really cares about their students and class. With more teachers like this there'd be no need for homework and school would feel more valuable to students.
If teachers put their energy into these other educational pursuits, I see no reason for homework.
