2023-2024 NHD Schedule

 Major deadlines and significant dates for students to meet this year:

August 31 - Parent information night for Questions and Answers with Dr. Pratt at 5pm at her WebEx link (will be recorded if anyone misses it)

September 8 - Sign your contract for your competition category and whether you are competing solo or with a team. If you are in a team (up to 3 students in Hawaii) then team members will have to sign a contract. This group contract will be due on September 15.

September 15 - Sign your contract for your final decision of research topic. Submit your competition photo portrait, shirt size, and parent email. Group contracts are due today.

September 16-October 27 - Conduct broad research. Immerse yourself in books, documentaries, podcasts, movies, and organize notes. Learn the Who, What, Where, When, and Why of your chosen topic.

September 30 - We do not have school, but you may come on campus to work with us in an NHD workshop 8am until 11am if you sign up

October 21 - We do not have school, but you may come on campus to work with us in an NHD workshop 9am until noon if you sign up

October 27 - First Draft of your thesis statement is due

November 10 - We do not have school for Veteran's day, but you can come to an NHD workshop with us 9am until noon if you sign up

November 17 - Projects with scripts, outlines, and timed concepts (performances and documentaries) should be finalized so you can start production and editing

December 1 - We will finalize the appearance and outline of our annotated bibliographies (alphabetical order, primary vs secondary sources)

December 1-December 8 - We will peer evaluate each other's projects and use their feedback to perfect our projects over the month of December

December 8 - If you want to sign up for my George Washington Leadership Study,  today is the deadline to sign up for it (begins after Winter Break)

December 18 - Your first draft of your project Title is due - try to make it catchy and interesting. Projects fare better when the theme is present in your title (Turning Point) - remember that the judges are looking for projects that tie back to the theme best of all. Start with your title. We will peer edit title suggestions this week.

December 22 - We do not have school, but you may come on campus for an NHD workshop with us 9am until noon if you sign up

January 4 - We do not have school, but you may come on campus for the last and final NHD workshop with us 9am until noon if you sign up

January 12 - Historical Essays (Paper Category) are DUE today by 5pm via email to andrea-bernadette.pratt@k12.hi.us

January 17 - All projects must be completely finished and ready for competition

January 20 - School based NHD competition to decide which 8 projects in each category will move forward to represent us at Division level.

January 27 - Online registration for the District competition closes. This deadline will be determined by the Hawaii Council for the Humanities

February 13th - Project uploaded and finalized for District Competition 

February 15th - ZFairs will lock down papers and websites - no further editing allowed! Papers should be uploaded as a pdf. Make sure all editing remarks, citations, footnotes, appendices, and bibilography are in the correct format. Websites must make sure their Written Works are done correctly and are linked to their site. ZFairs will lock down the papers and websites at 5pm, and entries will start to be judged online after this!

February 24th - District Competition at Chaminade University (in the Hale Hoaloha). Documentaries, Exhibits, and Performances will be judged LIVE. If your team cannot attend on  February 24th, we need to arrange an interview prior to the competition. You need to let Ms. Pratt know right away if you are going on the band trip to Kauai, etc.

All competitors need to bring hard copies of their Written Works (title page, process paper, annotated bibliography) to the event.

April 20th - State Competition at Windward Community College

June 9-14 - National Competition at University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland
