These are the top 4 Junior performances and 1 Senior performance chosen at School Level to move forward to District on February 24th:
1st Place Performance (Reika, Leila, and Nalani)
The Bombings of Hiroshima
Reika, Leila, and Nalani's Thesis Statement:
The atomic bombings of Japan was a catastrophic event that led to immense suffering. Toward the end of the second world war, Germany had already been defeated and Japan refused to accept The allies’ demand of an “unconditional surrender”. A new weapon had been developed by the American Scientific community, and it was determined by the US government that the extreme measure was necessary to use this weapon against Japan which they’ve refused to surrender. On August 6, 1945, America dropped two destructive atomic bombs to put an end to the war, which became a major turning point in history. Victims suffered immeasurably for decades to come.This was the only example to the present date of nuclear weapons being used against a population. It was not the only time these horrendous weapons were used either. The citizens of bikini atoll and many other places were gravely affected. These events are unfortunate examples of why nuclear weapons should never be used again.
2nd Place Performance (Baoan, Elerrina, and Chloe)
The creation of instant noodles
Baoan, Elerrina, and Chloe's Thesis Statement:
In 1958, Momofuku Ando revolutionized the world with a major turning point in the food industry by designing a method of affordable instant noodles that would eventually turn into a multibillion dollar, international food industry for the rest of the world. He established the Nissin Food Products and founded the Ando Foundation. Instant ramen culturally inspired the entire world of these minute made noodles.

Beach Volleyball
Laila and Sara's Thesis Statement:
Beach Volleyball has experienced many changes over the course of around a century. Originating in Hawaii during 1915, beach volleyball has grown, both in requirements, and popularity. Immediately after the creation of beach volleyball, the sport spread around the world. After reaching Santa Monica, beach volleyball was taken to the masses from its major changes to what was once a recreational activity. Santa Monica’s invention of jetties, and 4-player (both sides) version of beach volleyball planted a seed for the development of the sport. Prior to these changes, beach volleyball was played on an uneven surface, with 12 players total (both sides). This turning point started the beach volleyball era and improved the sport. Jetties have helped create a future for beach volleyball. Shortly after the turning point in beach volleyball in Santa Monica, The Great Depression hit America. This period of time, lasting from 1929–1941, was Beach Volleyball’s big popularity growth, as it was an inexpensive activity.

Patsy Mink
Nina's Thesis Statement:
After overcoming the adversity of the sexism and racism she experienced in her early life, Patsy Takemoto Mink decided to take matters into her own hands and vie for a federal seat in 1964 to change the world she lived in. Her successful election was a major turning point in American social and political history. She became the youngest member of Congress from the youngest state in America. She was the first woman from Hawaii elected to Congress, and was the first woman of color elected to the House. During her time in office, she authored and influenced a great deal of legislation to take care of American children, education, and gender equity. One of her most impactful legacies was being the key author and sponsor of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which outlawed sex discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal funding. This significant legislature was eventually renamed the Patsy T Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act. She used her life experiences and passionate voice to make a difference for all Americans through meaningful legislature and political activism that continues to make a difference today, even after her death. Patsy Mink’s election in 1964 created a turning point for American social and political history that continues to impact lives today. She overcame the oppression she experienced through culture and legislature and rose to the positions that allowed her to change that culture and legislature to ensure a better future for others.
