We are learning All About Building in PreK!
This project is focused on building and construction as a way to develop preschoolers’ abilities to make connections and to make sense of new experiences. During this exciting learning opportunity, our students are using processes such as exploration, collaboration, cooperative play, and problem solving. Through building, Pre-K students are also working and developing other important skills such as communication and self-expression, math concepts, spatial sense, motor abilities and hand-eye coordination, scientific reasoning, creativity and imagination, social and emotional growth, self-esteem, and executive function skills.
During this collaborative unit, students are using WICOR to:
W - draw models, journals, label after drawing using letters, symbols, scribbles or letter-like forms
I - explore materials, pictures, and models, make predictions, ask questions about building and construction
C - collaborate to design and create using blocks and other materials (e.g., popsicle sticks, straws), sharing ideas with each other, building as a tea
O - create a plan for their constructions using a circle map, sort materials by attributes, label
R - listen to read alouds about building, look at and “read” books about building, use related vocabulary to comment, ask and respond to questions, respond appropriately to specific vocabulary and simple statements from books, pretend to read books about building and describe what is on each page using illustrations as cues
