SUMMER SCHOOL ENROLLMENT
Hawaii Online Courses Summer online program offers a variety of rigorous courses in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Health, and Fine Arts. Classes are open to Hawai’i resident high school students (including incoming 9th graders for the 2025-2026 school year). Students not enrolled in a Hawaii DOE public or charter school should verify with your primary school that credits earned through HOC will be accepted. Students and/or parents are to register on their own directly to Hawaii Online Courses.
Online Registration Begins: April 7, 2025 at 8:30 a.m.
Online Registration Ends: April 23, 2025 @ 2:30 p.m.

SUMMER SCHOOL DATES: June 4, 2025 to July 17, 2025
Students are expected to login EVERY DAY of the session, Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) and complete assignments and assessments.
Live sessions are not generally held. Classes are mostly asynchronous requiring students to complete work independently. Students should be self-motivated as courses are rigorous. There may be occasional synchronous meetings online (LIVE) that will be determined by your teacher after summer school starts.
Summer school is accelerated requiring much time and dedication.
Semester Courses (.5 credit): 1 summer school day = 1 week of regular school
Year Courses (1 credit): 1 summer school day = 2 weeks of regular school
Depending on the course and individual student, the approximate time students need to complete summer school work averages between 3-6 hours per day, per course. Please do not enroll in summer school if you cannot commit to this amount of time per day.
It is recommended you DO NOT enroll in summer school if you are:
Going on a trip or vacation
Attending another summer school
Attending a tournament or other sporting event not in Hawaii
Have a job
Participating in community service that requires a significant amount of time
YOU WILL NOT BE GRANTED EXTENSIONS OR ALLOWED TO MAKE UP ANY ASSIGNMENTS AS SUMMER IS ACCELERATED.
All classes (.5 and 1 credit) run from June 4 to July 17.
Holidays observed: June 11 (King Kamehameha Day), July 4 (Independence Day)
If you are signing up for two .5 courses, both run for six weeks concurrently. Students must login to both classes EVERY DAY (Monday - Friday) of the session. CANVAS is the learning management system that contains the courses.
There are no set times to login as long as you access your course EVERY DAY to complete assignments and assessments.

REGISTRATION
ALL ENROLLMENTS MUST BE DONE ONLINE. Parents/guardians must register their children online for summer school courses. Registration will be canceled if school Site Facilitators use Genius personal accounts to enroll students.
Important: When completing the enrollment form on registration day, DO NOT use the auto-fill feature on your browser. Doing this may cause the registration to be under the parent name instead of the student's name. Please double-check you entered all information correctly before submitting your registration.
Students are only allowed to enroll in up to one credit for summer school. For example, students can take two .5 semester classes (Modern History of Hawaii and Participation in Democracy) OR one 1-credit class (Algebra 2). Please refer to the course listing to determine credits for courses. Failure to abide by this policy may result in the cancellation of your registration.
Do not enroll in more classes than you can complete. By registering for courses and then dropping later, you prevent other students in need from taking summer school. Each year there are waitlists.
Do not register for the same course with another summer school, such as your primary school. Please be considerate of other students who would like to register for classes by not dual enrolling and then dropping. This prevents students on the waitlist from taking classes. Enrollment may be canceled if you dual enroll for the same course.
For increased equity, HOC is not accepting requests for specific teachers. The registration system randomly places students in sections.
If your child has a 504 or IEP, please email the documents to hoc@k12.hi.us. Due to the supplementary nature of the HVLN HOC online program, we are only able to provide limited accommodations for a student with an IEP or 504. Please refer to the Student Parent Handbook for more information.
ALL DOE AND CHARTER SCHOOL STUDENTS: In order to register, you must have your 10-digit Student ID Number. You can find this number on your report card or ask your school counselor for this information. Additionally, please enter your first and last name as it appears in Infinite Campus. For example, student Eliza Rae H. Apana, should have a First Name entered of Eliza Rae, not just Eliza.
Registration requires valid student and parent email addresses. Student and parent emails should be different. Please enter this information correctly or you will not receive the email confirmation. Please do not use your child's primary school account as sometimes the school blocks external emails. It is recommended to use a personal email account. Check your spam folder if you do not receive an email shortly after registration.
In order to take HOC classes, parents/guardians must provide electronic consent for (1) their child's use of the various Tech Tools in the course, and the (2) Student Publication Audio/Video Release form. You will provide an electronic signature during the registration process.
Non-Hawai‘i Public School Students (private and homeschooled) should verify with your primary school that credits earned through HOC will be accepted before enrolling. Non-Hawai‘i Public School students pay tuition set by the Hawaii State Department of Education. See the Fees section below.

WAITLIST
Do not count on a spot if you are waitlisted. The majority of registered students do not withdraw. It is recommended you look for another summer school as soon as possible. As each school is run separately, please refer to the DOE Summer School website for other options or speak with your primary school for suggestions.
If classes reach capacity, continue with the enrollment process if you want to be placed on a waitlist.
You will be notified through email if a space becomes available.
If a space opens and you have already registered for other courses, please email HOC which course you would like to replace. Students may take only up to one credit total for summer.

MANDATORY STUDENT ORIENTATION FOR NEW STUDENTS TO CANVAS
Students must pass an online mandatory student orientation course in Canvas or registration will be canceled.
Students who have taken online classes with HOC (Blackboard), will need to complete a new student orientation in Canvas.
If this requirement is not completed by the deadline indicated on the registration email, you will be dropped from summer school. You will receive the login and information for this requirement after you complete enrollment.
Complete the orientation as soon as possible to secure your spot.
Students on the waitlist who complete the mandatory student orientation will be given priority if a space becomes available.
Students who have taken HOC courses in Canvas since Summer 2022, do not need to complete this requirement again.

FEES
The State of Hawaii Department of Education received federal funds for 2024 from The American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER III). There will be no tuition cost for Hawaii public and charter school students.
Summer school for Hawaii Online Courses will be free for:
Students enrolled in Hawaii Public and Charter Schools for 2024-2025 or 2025-2026. This will be verified through the State's Infinite Campus system, entering your 10-digit student ID number upon registration, or confirmation from primary school.
Non-DOE students (private, homeschool) must pay a fee of $95 per 0.5 credit course and $190 per 1 credit course. Please email hoc@k12.hi.us for information on submitting payment and required enrollment documents (birth certificate, proof of residency, etc.)

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:
To withdraw from a course, parents must email the HOC Summer School office at hoc@k12.hi.us.
Please include the following information to process your request:
Student and parent first and last names
Phone number
Course name
Reason for withdrawal
Processing may be delayed if all information is not provided.
If HOC does not receive an official request via email from the parent to withdraw from a course, the student will remain in summer school and receive the grade earned that will be posted on the official DOE transcript.
Do not contact your primary school or counselor to withdraw as summer school is separate.
Last day to withdraw without a mark on the official DOE transcript is June 13.
Last day to withdraw with a "W" on the official DOE transcript is July 7.
After July 7, students must remain in the course and receive the grade earned. Final grades will be posted to the official DOE transcript and factored in the high school GPA.
No credit/grade will be given to any student who is dismissed from summer school.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT, ONLINE MEETINGS, ACCESS TO CLASSES
Students must have access to a computer, Internet, and headsets.
Online synchronous meetings may be scheduled throughout the session. Dates and times will be determined after class begins and the teacher meets with the students.
Classes will be available in Canvas for officially registered students on the first day of summer school, June 4 at 8:00 a.m. Students will not have access to courses (except the mandatory Student Orientation) before the start date.

ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to login every day of the session. If you are unable to meet this requirement, it is recommended you do NOT register for Hawaii Online Courses.
HOC summer session is an accelerated program (not self-paced). Excessive absences will lead to disciplinary action, which may include a reduction in course grade, not earning course credit, and/or release from the summer program.
If you are planning a summer vacation or trip, this may not be the platform for you.
YOU WILL NOT BE GRANTED EXTENSIONS OR ALLOWED TO MAKE UP ANY ASSIGNMENTS DUE TO A TRIP, VACATION, COMMUNITY SERVICE, JOB, SPORTING EVENT (TOURNAMENT), ETC.

DISCIPLINE
All DOE Chapter 19 and HOC rules apply. In addition, regulations from the Department of Education Chapter 19 - subchapter 3, STUDENT MISCONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE IN SUMMER SCHOOL will be strictly enforced.
A student who commits a Chapter 19 class A or class B offense shall be dismissed from summer school. Regardless of when the student is dismissed, there will be no refund of tuition. A student who commits two of any Chapter 19 class C or class D offenses will receive a warning for the first offense and may be released from summer school for the second offense.

REPORT CARDS
Reports cards will be distributed at the end of summer school.
Grades for DOE students will be posted to transcripts by OITS/Infinite Campus office in late August. You may provide a copy of your final report card to your primary school registrar after summer school ends.
For students not enrolled in the DOE, please have your primary school registrar contact hoc@k12.hi.us if they require a final report card or grade verification. We do not provide transcripts, only report cards.
