The Nanakuli-Waianae Complex Area is in the midst of a cultural shift, one in which more students are becoming College, Career, and Life ready. In 2023, at least 75% of all new job opportunities require continued education after high school and trends indicate that this percentage will only increase in the future. As a result, all K-12 schools must provide opportunities for students to expand their ‘career and life literacy’ in preparation for their entry, and ultimate success, in post-secondary education. Here are a few programs that are being implemented to provide students opportunities to practice and demonstrate their levels of readiness.
The Nanakuli-Waianae Complex Area fully supports student participation in Career and Technical Education through career exploration, pathways and academies. Career Pathways are broad groupings of career specialties/occupations that have common skills and knowledge. They provide an ideal organizing tool at all educational levels—kindergarten through college—to guide career exploration and planning activities, to focus teaching and learning, and to link education with relevant, real-world activities. Approximately 75% of all Nanakuli and Waianae High School graduates complete a CTE program annually.
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The basic tenet of AVID is to support the students 'in the academic middle' who are often the least-served population within a school. The goal of AVID is to increase the number of students who enroll in a four-year university by providing them strategies and support to be successful. Teachers at AVID site schools attend professional development to learn how to best implement AVID methodologies and support students to achieve their goals of post-secondary education.
