Since Fall 2013, the Mililani High School FIRST Robotics team has been hosting the annual Igniting Inspiration STEM Camp for elementary grade students in the Mililani school district. Our goal with this FIRST STEM camp was to get younger students interested in the fields of science, engineering, technology, and math by having our high school students mentor and teach the younger students through various hands-on projects.
In 2015, the Mililani High School Science club became a partner in hosting STEM club and has since aided in expanding the STEM Camp program to encompass additional fields of STEM, with varied experiences in STEM for the enrolled students.
With the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the STEM Camp had to be canceled due to concerns with health and safety. However, with a renewed vigor to inspire the next generation of STEM learners, STEM Camp will be making a return in 2022.
While the students and camps have changed every year, one thing remains the same: our clubs' commitment to inspiring the next generation of students with an interest in STEM.
During this five-day camp, our goal is to instill in the younger generation of students the value of STEM and useful life skills. Each camp, in some way, involves complex problem-solving and creativity through the STEM-based activities contained in each. There is a camp for each type of STEM-minded student, ranging from areas such as engineering and construction to computer science and programming.
EDP Build Projects Camp
For students in grades 3 - 5
Students learn the fundamentals of the Engineering Design Process and build their skills with the EDP by engage in several engineering-build challenges. Students will need to design solutions to challenges, construct objects within defined constraints, and test and reiterate the process.
Programming with Scratch
For students in grades 3 - 5
Students learn introductory programming through Scratch, a type of block-programming, to express their creative sides and make their own games, stories, animations, and more!
LEGO Robotics with EV3
For students in grades 3 - 5
Students engage in a modified, crash course of robotics design, assembly, and testing using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kit - based on the 2017 FIRST Lego League game Hydrodynamics. Students will learn about fundamental design principles, EV3 robot components, and ultimately deign and beat self-directed challenges using the game board and game pieces from FLL Hydrodynamics!
Freight Frenzy Jr.
For students in grades 6 - 8
Students engage in a modified, crash course of robotics design, assembly, and testing based on the 2021 FIRST Tech Challenge game Freight Frenzy. Students will learn about fundamental design principles, robot components, basic shop skills, and ultimately play the Freight Frenzy Jr. game with their built robots!
