SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH ENGINES
There are many search engines available online. But remember: Institutional scholarships, local Hawaii scholarships, the scholarships listed on Leilehua High School's Naviance, and WUE Schools are where you will find more opportunities to actually be awarded scholarships. Read this article to help you choose a search engine, if you still want to use one.
Warning! A word of caution to students looking for scholarships
Don't pay for help to find money for college. Students are encouraged to check companies who charge fees.
Do not give personal info such as your Social Security Number nor bank account numbers.
If you are concerned about any organization, then contact the Better Business Bureau to verify companies' reputations and if complaints have been made.
INSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Check the financial aid page on the websites of the colleges to which you are applying for their institutional scholarships. They are for use at that college only, but they are often the most generous of scholarships so they are worth the time it takes to apply.
Financial Aid is awarded on a first come first served basis so make sure you submit your FAFSA before the colleges' priority admissions and financial aid deadlines!
WESTERN UNDERGRADUATE EXCHANGE (WUE) SCHOOLS
The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) makes residents of WICHE states eligible for a reduced tuition rate at participating two- and four-year college programs outside of their home state. The WUE reduced tuition rate is not automatically awarded to all eligible candidates. Many institutions limit the number of new WUE awards each academic year, so apply early!
Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) states include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
There is no application through WICHE. Students apply for WUE directly through the colleges at which they are applying.
