Dual Credit: Early College & Running Start

Through an agreement and partnership with Hawaiʻi Community College, Kaʻū High School students are able to concurrently earn dual high school and college credits through the Dual Credit program. This means taking a college class will also earn credit for a high school class. There are 2 dual credit options for high school students.

  1. Early College Program - These dual-credit college courses are offered only to high school students at a particular high school, and are taught at that high school or online by a college professor.

  2. Running Start Program - These are regularly scheduled college courses that are open to all students at Hawaiʻi Community College and are offered online or in person on-campus.

Students must apply to Hawaiʻi Community College as an Early College student in order to earn the college credits. A high school teacher or counselor within the Global Learning Lab will help all students apply to Hawaiʻi Community College. All students will be automatically accepted as an Early College student. Acceptance to Hawaiʻi Community College will create a University of Hawaiʻi transcript that will record all college credits earned throughout high school.

College credits count towards students earning certificates and degrees from Hawaiʻi Community College while enrolled in high school. While a high school student, there is no cost for earning these college credits. All college credits earned are transferable to other schools within the University of Hawaiʻi system, and many other colleges and universities.

Most college courses taken (100 level courses or higher) are considered the same as “AP” courses in high school, and are treated the same in calculating grade point averages. HWST 100 and IS101 are the first college-level (100 or above) courses that are offered to students and are taught at Kaʻū High School for Kaʻū High School students only. After successful completion of these courses, students will be able to take further college-level courses.
