Recognizing ACBMs

EPA Classification of ACBMs: Miscellaneous ACBMs

Miscellaneous ACBMS are a "catch all" for ACBMs that are not Thermal System Insulation or Surfacing Materials.

They include:

  • Floor and ceiling tiles

  • Gaskets, mastic, wallboard

  • Asbestos/cement products (Transite)

Miscellaneous asbestos-containing materials not covered under AHERA/HAR 11-502:

Recall that the definition of ACBM: Surfacing ACM, thermal system insulation ACM, or miscellaneous ACM that is found in or on interior structural members or other parts of a school building, which can include sheetrock, drywall, plaster, mastic, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, sheet linoleum, baseboards, and joint compound.

The following materials are not ACBMs as defined by AHERA/HAR 11-502:

Not "in or on structural members"

  • Fabrics such as stage curtains

  • Kilns (on wheels)

Not "interior" (exterior building components)

  • Roofing felt, mastic & siding

Examples of Miscellaneous ACBMs:

9" x 9" vinyl asbestos floor tile.

Sheet linoleum flooring (often linoleum is not ACM, but there is an ACM paper backing).

12" x 12" vinyl asbestos floor tile. Not all 12" x 12" vinyl floor tiles are asbestos-free. Not all 9" x 9" vinyl floor tiles contain asbestos. You cannot predict whether a floor tile contains asbestos by looking. The only way to confirm that a material does or does not contain asbestos is to have samples analyzed.

Sheetrock / Wallboard is a miscellaneous ACBM.

Joint compound (mud) in a wallboard system. Often the sheetrock/wallboard is asbestos-free, but the joint compound contains asbestos. This can potentially lead to sampling errors, if the wall is painted and joint compound is not included in the samples.

Ceiling tiles and lay-in panels may be ACBMs.
