The Menstrual Stigma

in India

Menstrual hygiene management and female empowerment

"As a young Indian-American girl, my family was very open about our health, however whenever we visited extended family everything was always secret. I was so confused with this secrecy. My grandmother did not allow my mother or female family members to participate in poojas, our religious ceremonies, or attend weddings and temples.

I was in shock. I began to wonder that if there are restrictions with my grandmother, what is it like actually in India? Why are we considered "dirty" and "impure" when menstruating?

When presented with the opportunity of a CAPStone project, I knew that this would be something that I wanted to pursue and help solve. "
