Hi! My name is Karishma Mistry. I am a senior at Andover High School and am apart of the Global Pathways program. For my CAPStone project, I am focusing on the health of women and girls in developing countries, like India. There is a large stigma and taboo around menstrual cycles and pregnancy that should be normalized in order to protect the health of females. I’m interested in researching how, as a society, we can help reduce this stigma and promote the health of these young females in such countries.
Outside of CAPstone, you can find me working or participating in various activities. I hold a job at an after school program at High Plain Elementary School two to three days a week. I love writing and am a managing editor for our schools newspaper The Warrior. In school, I am also a Co-President for the AHS Red Cross chapter, a mentor for freshman students, and on the National Honor Society Executive Board.
As both an American and British citizen, I love traveling and spend most of my summers in the U.K. visiting family. I am also an avid reader: my most recent favorite is The Handmaid’s Tale. Concerts are some of my favorite places to be and I have been to around 14 in the past 6 years. I love relaxing with family and friends and of course eating good food.
Being a part of the Global Engagement program has led me to live a more global path in life. I have become more globally aware, globally minded, and compassionate student.
I travelled to Costa Rica for 9 days as my immersive travel experience. It was an amazing opportunity to learn about a new culture and way of life based in nature. My global service consisted of 20 hours in Costa Rica during my travel as well as 20 hours at Buddy Up, a program at High Plain Elementary School in Andover for English Language Learner students. I believe that I am a very globally conscious individual being culturally Indian as well as an American and British citizen. Having a connection to these three cultures and regions has forced me to be aware of what is happening in each region and to learn more about each culture. The UN Global Goals has given me guiding topics that I am very interested in continuing to learn more about in university, specifically, Good Health and Wellbeing, Quality Education, Gender Equality, and Clean Water and Sanitation. These goals correspond with my research focused on how the menstrual stigma in India affects young girls health and education.
Next year, I will be attending the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences and the Commonwealth Honors College. I will hopefully have a concentration in women's health and reproductive justice. I am excited to continue my educational career at UMass and can't wait to see how my experience in Capstone and Global will impact my future.
