Name Art:

I can turn line into shape (creating bubble letters).I can use a variety of lines (zig-zag, loopy, bumpy, etc.), and shapes to turn my name into a piece of art.

Summer Fun Narratives:

Why do artists make art? I can use my personal experiences to let you know about me.

Horizon lines were discussed and considered.


Fall Tree and Me:

Art can be inspired by the world around us and our personal experience.

Color mixing, texture, and horizon line were all discussed and considered.

Sun and Moon:

Hot and cool colors were discussed. Students learned how to mix and blend chalk pastels



Spiders:

Art can be inspired by literature.(Eric Carl's "Very Busy" Spider)

Focus was placed on using the primary colors to create the secondary colors and the collage method.

Pattern Pumpkins:

Art can be inspired by other artists.

Students learned about the contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama and her use of line and pattern to create her famous pumpkins.


Owls:

Art can be inspired by the natural world.Why aren't owls brightly colored? What is camouflage? What are the neutral colors?

The used of texture was discussed to create the tree bark, feathers, and starry sky.


Season of Lights

Around the world, people have celebrations and traditions where they light candles. Students used painted papers to create their own candle(s).


Winter Fun:

Art can be inspired by personal experience.

Focus was placed on mixing and blending color, horizon line, and composition.


Lunar New Year:

What can art tell you about a culture?Focus was placed on capturing the essence of the subject matter by using minimal brush strokes.

Winter Houses:

Students designed winter houses. They considered window and door placement and shape. They added details- and a secret room! (open the flaps to see a surprise!)

Mosaic Hearts

Students learned about the ancient art form of mosaics and then created their own.

Focus was placed on cutting skills and composition.


Dreams and Dreaming:

Inspired by Marc Chagall's dreamlike paintings, students drew themselves sleeping and their "dreams" floating above.

Vehicles:

Inspired by Dr. Seuss' "Oh the Places You'll Go", students made vehicles that would take them to various destinations.

The Mysterious Egg:

In the book "The Mysterious Tadpole" by Steven Kellogg, Luis gets a beautiful rock that begins to hatch! What is emerges from this egg? Students had to guess with their drawings before seeing how the writer illustrator ends his story.


Bird Sculptures:

Students pinched, pulled and pressed to create these clay birds.

Swimming:

How can I use line and the shape of my body to show that I am moving? Students created these paintings after looking at David Hockney's famous pool paintings of the 1960's and 70's.

Animals and their Habitats:

Students draw a variety of animals from observation (toy models) and then select their favorite to turn into a painting. Focus is on observational drawing and mixed media.




Digital Art

Students work collaboratively using the iPads to create original art by combining photography and drawing.
