Throughout Middle School and part of my sophomore year I was apart of the Buddy Up Program at High Plain Elementary School. In this program I worked with ELL students, to help them gain connections within the school and to also help them with their homework and overall feel more comfortable after moving to the United States. As I was and older mentor, I took place in leading one of the many groups, and guided the middle school mentors in helping with the students. Although time in Buddy Up for sophomore year was cut short, I'm excited to continue this throughout high school as it grants me with the perspective of diversity throughout our community. My experience with Buddy Up connects with Global UN Goal #4 & #10: Quality Education & Reduced Inequalities as it was focused on helping ESL students to adjust to American school systems and be able to connect with others and have equal opportunities in their education.
At the beginning of my sophomore year I begun volunteering at the Cor Unum meal center in Lawrence. Here as a group we all work to provide any people in need, with food and safe place to come and be with their families. Volunteers all gather together in hopes of making some difference in this world as we know that we should all do our bit in helping those in need. At the meal center I tended to be a server and manage a table. I found this to be an amazing experience from the time I have been there, as an assortment of people come in with happy faces and are of different cultures, and are all eager to share their story or learn about mine. My experience with Cor Unum relates to Global UN Goals #1 & #2: No poverty & Zero hunger. Cor Unum was focused on helping people in Lawrence and surrounding communities who struggled to find warm and nutritious meals. It gave them a place of relief and also a place where they could come to for help.
