LEAP Action
I want to explore how we can help developing countries gain an equal footing in society today. It seems as if as the developed countries are progressing, people are forgetting about these smaller and less developed countries, who are struggling to gain access to necessary resources. With this idea, I would like to explore the stigmatization that surrounds GMOs or genetically modified organisms.
Why this LEAP?
My grandparents have always told me stories about their early lives in India and Uganda and then the struggles they endured when they moved to England. They, like many others, lived in poor conditions unlike what you would see in the United States, and have opened my eyes to see the economic gap and inequalities between "developed" and "developing" countries. I feel that living in America many don't like to admit how good we truly have it, and struggle to see why we need to help these other countries. I want to explore this topic in order to ensure people throughout the world are granted equal opportunities and so that countries that are still developing do not fall further behind. I also hold a passion for bioengineering, so if possible, I would like to look through the lens of UN's Sustainable Development Goals 2: Zero Hunger and 10: Reduced inequalities, to see how we can alter the genetic makeup of some staple foods in these countries to ensure people are getting the proper nutrients they need and create an equal opportunity for them to gain access to these important foods.
Where do I hope to land?
I hope to bring awareness and compassion towards developing countries, and provide a way that we can lessen the economic gap between us and them, while also creating acceptance towards the use of GM crops.
