Equity Work Timeline
2020-2021
In August, the Board adopted a new Racial Harassment policy. The Bullying, Harassment, etc. policy includes racial harassment, but we felt it necessary to have a stand alone policy to provide further clarity.
At the beginning of the school year, two new online training modules for staff and board members: (1) Discriminatory Harassment- Identification and Response, and (2) Implicit Bias and Cultural Responsiveness for Educators were added to our annual online-training requirements this year. These trainings require passing a competency exam and need to be completed annually by all staff.
Carla Gary is an expert in the field and was our Welcome Back keynote speaker during staff's first day back to work. She discussed that systemic racism has deep history in our state (and nation), and that it continues today in our schools and communities. We can no longer ignore what our students are experiencing, even if we aren't experiencing it ourselves. We as educators have a moral and ethical mandate to summon our courage, inform ourselves, and truly keep our kids safe.
The district contracted with Courageous Conversation to provide a day and a half of mandatory training for all staff and every board member on October 23rd-24th. This training addressed implicit bias and the impact of race on our lives personally, professionally and organizationally.
On October 14th, ODE Civil Rights Specialist Winston Cornwall provided an all-staff training to ensure that our staff fully understands their responsibility to adhere to all board policies. This training also focused on ensuring that staff recognize, and have tools to respond to, racist comments and actions, including micro-aggressions. Staff have been reminded that failure to adhere to policies and standards will subject them to possible disciplinary action and that any action in violation of the District’s policies that are outside the scope of employment will not be covered by the District’s liability insurance and they may be found personally liable.
In November, the Board adopted the All Students Belong policy, which defines "Bias Incidents" and bans hate symbols (swastika, noose, Confederate flag). Our district was involved in advocacy at the state level to get this initiative passed.
Our Board has begun the process of developing an anti-racism Resolution. The board met in a special work session on January 14th to begin drafting this Resolution.
