In this unit, students will explore careers within the animation industry, build a career portfolio, and learn about copyright laws and client confidentiality.
(1) The student demonstrates professional standards/employability skills as required by business and industry. The student is expected to:
(a) identify and participate in training, education, or certification for employment;
(c) identify and demonstrate positive work behaviors and personal qualities needed to be employable;
(d) create a career portfolio to document information such as work experiences, licenses, certifications, and work samples;
(e) demonstrate skills in evaluating and comparing employment opportunities; and
(f) examine employment opportunities in entrepreneurship.
(8) The student applies ethical decision making and understands and complies with laws regarding use of technology in animation. The student is expected to:
(a) exhibit ethical conduct related to interacting with others such as maintaining client confidentiality and privacy of sensitive content and giving proper credit for ideas;
(b) discuss and apply copyright laws;
(c) model respect of intellectual property;
(d) demonstrate proper etiquette and knowledge of acceptable use policies; and

Lesson Overview
In this lesson, students are exposed to the various careers in the animation industry and the industry certification they will be completing at the end of this program of study. They will also learn some basic employment and wage statistics for the industry. At the end of the lesson, students will complete a quiz on the lesson content.

Students will be able to identify the industry-based certification for the animation program and discuss how it will help them in their careers.

Lesson Overview
In this lesson, students are introduced to career portfolios. They will learn why career portfolios are necessary, what should be included in them, and will start to build their own portfolio on a Google Site. The first step in this process will be to create their show reel which will consist of every animation project that they’ve worked on thus far. They will compile and edit their show reel in Premiere Pro.

Students will be able to describe what a career portfolio is and what should be included in them.
Students will understand that their career portfolio is a constant work in progress that should be updated and maintained regularly.
Students will build their own career portfolio with their relevant work.
Students will build a Google Site to house their portfolio.
Students will build a homepage that contains a showreel of all their current animation work.
The showreel should demonstrate the student’s understanding and ability to apply the principles of animation.
Students will build a drawings page showcasing their art.
This can include observational, life drawing, concept sketches, characters, storyboards, etc.
These drawings should demonstrate the student’s understanding of elements and principles of design.
Students will build an about page describing themselves to potential clients or employers.

Review the lesson 2.1 slides with students. The first 3 minutes and 15 seconds of the student activity video can be viewed as a whole class. The rest of the video is designed for self-paced, solo work time. The activity instructions are embedded throughout the video.
