Every year, we love to track who is reading ABOVE AND BEYOND their AR goals and have committed to reading over ONE MILLION WORDS. Students who read one million words will go on a kayak trip in Jackson at the end of the school year. Check out this year's crew of readers below!
Teiyah was our first million word reader this school year. She was new to Obama this year, so it's been exciting to have one of our new students reach this goal (and before the winter break!) Teiyah loves Roald Dahl books, scary stories, and the Dork Diaries series. She's currently reading The Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley and is loving them! Teiyah pretty much reads anything I suggest!
Phoenix loves fantasy and mythology. He's been working through the Heroes of Olympus series after reading all of the Percy Jackson books last school year. He's also reading the Harry Potter series and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Phoenix loves to read!
This is Christopher's second year as a Million Word Reader. Christopher is quiet, studious, and a great athlete. Christopher just finished reading Angie Thomas' Nic Blake and the Remarkables series and highly recommends it to everyone. He believes that the bigger the book the better! He says his favorite book so far is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Skylar has fallen in love with the Harry Potter series this year and that is how she's reached one million words. She began book one in the fall and is now in book six. She says the Half Blood Prince is her favorite so far, but I can't wait to see what she says after reading The Order of the Phoenix! Skylar has enjoyed watching each movie after finishing each book. She says she enjoys the movies, but the books are much better. I agree! Another one of Skylar's favorite books this year year was Willowdeen by Katherine Applegate. She completed a fantastic reading fair project on the book, too.
This is Tydal's THIRD year as a million word reader. He was in second grade the first year that he read a million words and had to share a kayak with his mom on our end of year trip because he was too small to kayak by himself! Last year, he was a kayaking pro and is looking forward to our end of year trip again. Tydal prefers action and fantasy books, and a few favorites from this year have been The Strangers by Margaret Peterson Haddix and The Misadventures of Edgar and Allan Poe trilogy by Gordon McAlpine.
