Our middle school BRiMS members have been reading various genres and share their favorite books when we meet monthly. We recently ordered books to read together in small groups.
We will meet Wednesday, March 1st and Wednesday, March 29th since we were not able to meet in February. Stay tuned for pictures from our next meeting.
BRiMS was formed on February 29, 2012 because middle school students in 6th-8th wanted their opportunity to be part of a book group. Over the years, the grade levels that have participated has changed depending on lunch schedules. BRiMS is a group of students who love books, reading, and talking about what they read. Meetings are held monthly on the last Wednesday of the month during the lunch period, and a special snack is always provided.

This was the first scheduled author visit of the school year. Jen Calonita visited Taylor in March 2017. We also had a virtual visit with her in 2015. This time we talked about her newest book, Go the Distance. You can read all about our visit and see lots more pictures on our authors' page.

We kicked off the new year with a special game. It is called Bring Your Own Book, and every player needs a book in hand to play. The reader takes a card and reads one of the prompts to all the players. The players search their book for a word or words that could complete that prompt. Example of prompts are: text from a cookbook, name of an all-purpose household cleaner, and most important ingredient in a magic potion. The idea is to have fun and laugh. There are no losers or winners.

At this meeting students were asked to read a dystopian novel and share with the group. We started the discussion by defining what a dystopia was. They explained that it is an imperfect work that is the opposite of utopia. There is government control or technological control of people's lives. Often the dystopia is created by a disaster. Some of the books that were read include The Hunger Games by Collins with its sense of something to anticipate adding lots of excitement to the story. Atlantia by Condie is not a series and has a resolution at the end had characters with some unexpected abilities. Brave New Girl by Vincent was too predictable without enough surprises, but Divergent by Roth has lots of surprise with so many secrets kept hidden by the characters.

For our discussion of The Goldfish Boy, we decided not to talk about the ending and spoil the book for those who had not finished the story. The readers in BRiMS said mysteries like this one are popular because they like to try and solve the mystery along with the characters in the book. The fact that Matthew had OCD made the story even more interesting to them. The group spent most of the discussion talking about his OCD.

First meeting of the year! Students shared their recommendations with only 6 words. This was a big success as everyone had a chance to speak.
