Our students are having a great first few weeks! We are happy to have you with us as we continue our musical journey!
Thank you to everyone who has adopted and used our new Absence Request Form! This has greatly streamlined our attendance process, and is hopefully making it easier for our students to communicate their challenges and conflicts.
Also, we would like to send a belated Thank You to Mrs. Sany Denapolis-Bosarge, who sent in a generous donation to help with our Band Camp expenses!
By now, all students should have their own instrument (either personally acquired or borrowed from the school), and their own copy of the Essential Elements for Band (Books 1 and 2). If you have not yet done so, please take care of this ASAP. Your student will begin falling quickly behind without the proper materials.
Please note that there is a $30 course fee for Band. This fee will be added to your student account this week.
All students will receive a Haynes Band t-shirt. (Returning students may request a new shirt, or may continue to use the one they have.) Our new students will begin receiving their shirts this week, depending on availability.
Dr. Quincy Hilliard is returning to Haynes!!!!! He will be working with our Beginning Band on Thursday Sept. 15, and will return to work with our other groups in the Spring. If you haven't yet had the chance to work with Dr. Hilliard, he is a wonderful musician and a great motivator for both students and teachers. He does an excellent job of working with every student no matter their level, and he definitely gets our students fired up about Band!
You can read more about Dr. Hilliard here:
We include this list of Music Dealers for your convenience. Each of these dealers offers basic Band instrument supplies and assistance, and we encourage you to support our local businesses. If you know of other establishments that should be added to this list, please share them with Mr. Phelan.

Jazz Band One is our top Jazz performing group, focusing on performing challenging music at a very high level. We will rehearse after school Wednesdays. Students must be members in good standing of the Haynes Marching and Concert Bands to participate in Jazz Band.
Students interested in auditioning for All State Jazz or Concert Bands should sign up via the form below. Deadline is Monday, Aug. 29.
Further information will be emailed directly to those students as it becomes available.
Welcome to the Haynes Band! We are looking forward to a fun and successful year, and want to share a few items that may help to answer some common questions.
The first step on our Musical Journey is for you to secure an instrument for your student. There are several fine music dealers in Jefferson Parish. We have included a partial list below for your convenience. If you have a family-owned instrument, that may also be a good choice. Mr. Phelan will be happy to inspect the instrument to determine if it will be suitable for your student.
All Haynes Band students must purchase their own copy of the Essential Elements for Band (Books 1 and 2). These are also available at most local music dealers, and are often included in the lease or purchase price of the instrument. Students must also have a folder and a pencil at all times in Band class.
To keep your student from falling behind the class, we request that all students have fully-functional instruments by Monday, August 29. Haynes Academy has a very limited selection of Band instruments to loan to students. These are available for a nominal fee rental fee (currently $30 per school year). Please contact Mr. Phelan to learn more.
