Thermochronology is a field of study that uses thermal radiometric age resetting to reconstruct the time-temperature history of a sample. Thermochronology is extremely interdisciplinary because it covers a wide range of geological events involving temperature changes, and no existing academic society in Japan covers it alone (in addition to geochronology and geochemistry, which are the basis of the method, applied fields include tectonics, tectonic geomorphology, structural geology, volcanology, quaternary research, resource geology, archaeology, etc.).
Internationally, the thermochronology community is centered primarily in Europe and North America and convenes the International Conference on Thermochronology (Thermo) in odd-numbered years, attracting approximately 300 participants. In 2025, as part of the activities of this Focus Group, Thermo was successfully held in Kanazawa, Japan.
Future activities will focus on fostering the growth of the thermochronology community throughout Asia. To this end, we are promoting the establishment of a new international conference, the Asian Conference on Thermochronology (Thermo Asia), while also developing initiatives that contribute to the training and development of the next generation of researchers.
Session of JpGU
Aiming to strengthen ties with the international community and expand the base of the domestic community,
we basically hold English (E) and Japanese (J) sessions alternately.
