Reading and Activity Schedule
Fall 2025

Objectives: You must prepare for the AP English Language exam. The course is designed to cultivate the critical reading and analytical writing skills needed for college success. It will also prepare the students for intellectually responsible civic engagement, for as Thomas Jefferson said, "A well informed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny." Thus, you will read mostly the non-fiction that is the substance of the AP exam. Occasionally, students will read and write about poetry, short stories, and novels that have an important cultural standing.
The schedule will be changed as needed.
Recurrent activities:
~ Weekly SAT vocabulary development: regular worksheets, quizzes, and tests to develop higher
order vocabulary.
~Bi-weekly columnist project: analysis of self-selected editorials by professional columnists for
the purpose of increasing useful knowledge of current events and improving/developing
rhetorical analysis skill.
~We will read selected chapters of Ronald White’s Lincoln’s Greatest Speech, as handouts.
~AP multiple choice exercises: to familiarize you with and prepare you for the AP Exam multiple
choice section
~AP type in-class essays: to prepare you for and improve your skill in the various types of AP
exam essays.
~quizzes and tests in each six weeks.
