My student also does other things (like sports or dance), can they still do a music class?
Absolutely! Being in a music class is a regular class during the day, plus two or three one night concerts during the year that you will know about far in advance. We love when our students are involved in a lot of things and support well-rounded people.
We don't have an instrument, where can we get one?
The school rents out instruments and they are all $80 for the year. The instruments we have to rent are oboes, bassoons, French horns, trombones, euphoniums, tubas, violas, cellos and basses. If you are interested in renting from the school, scroll down to fill out the form.
If your student wants to play an instrument not listed, you can buy one or look into renting from a music store. Links to music store rentals can be found here: https://sites.google.com/jordandistrict.org/fhmsmusic/resources
My student already plays a band/orchestra instrument, can they audition to see if they can be placed in a higher group?
If your student already plays, I would love to hear them play to see which group would be the best fit for them. Email me and we figure it out. You do not need to meet with me before you register, I can talk to the counselors after we talk to make sure you are in the right class.
Why do you recommend some piano experience for percussion?
Half of percussion is on the keyboard instruments, which are extremely similar to the piano. I have found that most students that have not learned the piano first have a very difficult time in percussion and it is not always a great experience for everyone. If your student wants to play percussion but has not played piano, I recommend they learn another instrument for a year and then switch over to percussion after that year.
I don't see how to fit a band or orchestra class into my student's schedule, Is there still a way that they can take the class?
YES!!!! There are many different ways to fit a band or orchestra class into your student's schedule, even if they are in immersion or a reading class. Talk with your counselor and they can come up with some different options. Make sure you tell them taking band or orchestra is important to you, and they will do everything they can to help. If you still have trouble, please email me and I can help! Find out who your counselor is here: https://fhmscounseling.org/
