10 Ways You Can Support Your Child's Career Development

  1. Monitor and use Xello’s Parent Portal to review the child’s career development plan (CDP), which includes career matches, goals & plans, and course selections. If you don't have access to Xello Family, contact your school to request an email invite.

  2. Research your child's career interest, learn about the field, its positives and negatives, and have conversations with them about their career goals.

  3. Help them locate and evaluate career and college information (i.e. Xello and NCcareers.org) and stay on top of deadlines.

  4. Share personal workplace experiences, both positive and negative.

  5. Assist in selecting courses aligned to child’s career goals during the school's registration process.

  6. Reach out to school staff, such as the School Counselor, Career Development Coordinator, and teachers, for support and assistance when needed.

  7. Encourage participation in extended learning opportunities, like career and technical student organizations (CTSOs), field trips, job shadowing, and internships.

  8. Encourage resiliency by focusing on what they learned from failure, rather than the failure itself, and developing a plan for the future.

  9. Take your child to work with you and consider having them shadow a co-worker or friend

  10. Teach them financial literacy skills by talking with them about family finances, helping them open a banking account, and teaching them how to manage money made from jobs and chores.

Career Development Coordinators

Each traditional, comprehensive high school has a Career Development Coordinator (CDC) who facilitates students' career development. Students at other high schools and middle schools are supported in this area by their school counselors on a day-to-day basis.

Career & Technical Education (CTE) Central Services has two, part-time Middle School CDCs who support the middle school career development program through coordinating career exploration events like JOCO Works and the Career Development Plan (CDP) lessons and activities.

CTE Central Services also supports career development by providing district-wide, k-12 leadership to career and college readiness and planning.
