Substitute Shortages:

by Vanessa W.

In Summit middle school there is a shortage of Substitutes. I have heard that some substitutes are refusing to come to our school because of our behaviors as students. This means that whenever a teacher is gone for whatever reason, other teachers around the building have to go into the classroom of the teacher that is absent to teach. This can lead to under planned lessons and upset teachers. Substitutes get paid less than people who work in retail jobs. Substitute teachers have to go to college to obtain a bachelor's degree in order to become a teacher. People who work retail jobs aren’t required to have a college degree to work the jobs that pay more than being a substitute teacher. On average substitute teachers make about $34,466 per year while the average salary for retail workers is about $36,631 per year.
