The goal of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is to close the achievement gap so that all scholars are prepared for college, career, and life. In JNPSD we have the AVID School Wide program in two Elementary schools along with both JMS and JHS. AVID School Wide supports an intentional culture of career and college awareness with academic strategies for all scholars to prepare them for future success. In AVID, academic strategies are organized by WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading).
At JMS and JHS the AVID Elective program provides an elective class for scholars who want additional academic, social, and emotional support designed to help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses while preparing for the college application process and future careers.
While the AVID Elective Program targets scholars in the Academic Middle who are committed to preparing for college and careers after high school, all entering Sixth and Ninth grade scholars may apply for the program. Scholars in the AVID Elective program commit themselves to improvement and preparation for future success by developing their WICOR Skills (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading). Nationally scholars who complete the AVID Elective program in high school are four times more likely to graduate college in four years as compared to their college going peers. In addition, in 2020 90% of AVID high school seniors were accepted into a four year college.
AVID levels the playing field for minority, rural, low-income, and other scholars without the tradition of going to college in their families. AVID Schools have a culture of high expectations for all scholars with strong systems of academic and social emotional support.
