Local Customs & Language

Indonesians dress well, even for just going to the mall. Smart casual is the norm. Dress modestly. Long shorts and sleeveless tops are okay but short shorts and spaghetti straps are not advised. Avoid using your left hand to give or receive items nor raise it in greeting. The left hand is considered unclean in Indonesian culture and to use it as above is a great insult. Open displays of anger and displeasure are frowned upon. If you find yourself in a frustrating situation, take a deep breath, smile, excuse yourself (say, “maaf”), walk away to calm down and return when you feel composed.
