There are two versions regarding the origin of the name of the town - Shargorod. According to one, the name comes from the Polish word szary, which means "gray", that is, a gray town. According to another, the town got its name from the militant Florian Shary, who is considered the progenitor of all Zamoyskis, the founders and rulers of Shargorod.
The town of Shargorod has its own unique history, which begins in the distant 14th century, from the time of the rule of the Polish owners, its history continues as part of the Russian Empire, which happened after the partition of Poland, in the 19th century. Then the town entered the Podilsk province of the Russian Empire.
There were also revolutionary years when power changed hands: from the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic, the Polish army, the Red Army, Simon Petlyura's troops until the establishment of Bolshevik power in the spring of 1920.
Тhen another difficult period: the German-Soviet war. Shargorod was captured by the Germans on July 22, 1941. The Shargorod Jewish community survived the occupation; after the war and more than a thousand Jews remained here.
