According to Yad Vashem records, between 350,00 and 500,000 Jewish citizens of USSR (men and women) have served in the armed forces during WW-II. Many women also served in the medical core, and on and off the front line. A plethora of WW-II records is held in the New York based Blavatnik Archive. The former Red Army veterans were also recognized as the Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV)
USSR Jews met WW-II with three terrible choices:
to be slaughtered by the hands of the Nazies and their antisemitic collaborators
to be condemned to death by communists for refusing to fight for Stalin's regime
a soldier's way - to fight for one's family and livelihood
It seems that, without a second of hesitation, USSR Jews have chosen the 'soldier's way'. Over the years, they have served honorably on the battlefields. Some of those folks have later immigrated to USA, Canada and Australia. From the 1985 until ~2005 various USA organizations were trying to define the status of former Red Army veterans. In the USA, all naturalized USA citizens (former WW-II Red Army veterans) were recognized as equals to the members of the WW-II Western Allied Forces. In addition to their old time Soviet WW-II awards, they were given a World War II Victory Medal.
THEY HAVE ALL CONTRIBUTED ABOVE AND BEYOND TO LIBERATION OF THE WORLD FROM THE NAZISM.
FOR THIS, WE OWE THEM A DEBT OF GRATTITUDE.
We shall not confuse the sacrifices of the Jewish men and women during the battles of the WW-II with the actions and rhetoric of modern-day Russia and its' allies. Their narrative, surrounding World War II, is pursuing illegal land annexation ambitions. The actions of the Russian Federation shall not tarnish the sacrifices of the Jewish Red Army veterans.
The people in the photos are former 1915-1930 little kids forced to hide in the weeds and root cellars, in hopes that scary 'pogromshiks', White Army 'liberators', or Ukrainian 'freedom fighters' won't hack them with sabers. In 1941 they, as adults, have chosen to stand up to the aggressors.
The photos below show people with thousands of miles of war path under their belts. This is a rare opportunity to meet Repki Jews face to face.
Majority of photos were extracted from actual WW-II period records held in the Russian Federation archive Память Народа 1941-1945 . Few photos were donated by American families of former WW-II Red Army veterans.
The people in the list have served honorably in WW-II. Many have been awarded medals and orders for their bravery. Yet, even during the war, some of them were still subjected to antisemitic treatment.
It is quite obvious (to a 'trained eye') if one examined their first names and paternal names. To avoid the stigma, many had to change their nationality (in the soviet military ID there was a line...) from a Jew to either Ukrainian or Russian. To 'complete the transformation', their names have been changed too. You can see in the list below that some folks' first names were changed: Getzel to Grigoriy; Boruch to Boris, etc. The paternal names were russified too: Aronovitch and Abramovitch to Andreevitch; Itzkovitch to Ilyitch, etc.
From chats with the veterans, one aspect of this transformation jumped out. It was the communist party leadership action, not their comrades in the trenches. Regular soldiers and low ranking officers, for the most part, cared about their comrades in arms. Some higher ranking politruks and zealots communist officers were the antisemites. This is how the antisemitic sentiment of the Tsar's White Army infected Lenin's Red Army.
Not everyone has changed their Jewish paternal names. Those that did not, were not braver. The rate of 'russification' literally reflects the Jewish sentiment in the their specific detatchments. That is to say, many gentiles in the ranks were good, decent people.
The number of former 'Repki children' became engineers and highly skilled technicians. A majority of those were evacuated with their military plants beyond the Ural Mountains, out of the range of Nazi bombers. Hundreds of thousands of items of military grade equipment were produced by the military plants and factories. Interesting detail: many of the materials for the war industry were supplied by USA.

General ( by town) Search in Russian Military Archive.
Russian site Память Народа 1941-1945 provides digitized documents from the WW-II Red army archive. The draft notices are quite useful as they offer place and date of birth, and home address at the time of the draft. There are > 100 pages of war records for Repki Chernigov raion alone. To search, use the entry:
< Украинская ССР, Черниговская обл., Репкинский р-н, Репки > [ Try adding at the end < м. Репки > ; < п. Репки >; orr < г. Репки > ]
To reduce number of hits - fill in a surname and (if available) DOB
DO NOT WAIT to download your relatives information. Russian archives are 'leaky'. Many documents disappearing during their software updates. Given the political situation of 2025, the archive might just restrict the access to foreign nationals. Search requires Russian text. Search Memory of The People.
For surnames Use Google translations as a starting point. Doublecheck with Jewish Encyclopedia of Russia Surnames as the surnames/names might be spelled differently
Пропал без вести - MAI (body not recovered)
Погиб - KIA (death record certified by a commanding officer)
Умер от ран - died of wounds at the hospital
Списан по инвалидности - demobilized as a disabled person
Выбыл из госпиталя - released back to active duty
Осужден - sentenced by a military tribunal
Usual reasons would have been: alleged desertion, captured by the enemy, did not execute a direct order, accused by an informant, suspected in "anti-soviet" action. Majority of the front line sentencing would result in transfer to a 'disciplinary battalion'. Those soldiers would be given impossible tasks. The 'aim' of the punishment was to clean one's offense by spilling their blood on the battlefield. The lucky ones were then returned to a 'regular' army detachments.
Kонцлагерь - German POW camp (GER: 'stalag')
For a Jew such a capture would mean an immediate death sentence. For a Gentile in the first moths of the war, slow death by starvation. After 1942, Gentiles would have a slightly better chance to survive the camps. If they'd escaped, the soviet military police (NKVD) would send them into a disciplinary battalion, or even to Siberian Gulag
