Semen Belman
The Head of Chernigov Jewish Community, Semen Belman, is a publisher of the local newspaper “Thiya”. Belman continues the work of Anatoliy Zhaglovskiy, uncovering new evidence of ataman's atrocities in the Chernihiv oblast. Belman's article expanded on the original Galaka band story by Zhaglovskiy.
Anatoliy Zhaglovskiy
Zhaglovskiy researched the archival materials relevant to the Russian Civil War and Bolshevik collectivisation era. Zhaglovskiy's book “Galakovshina: Myths and Reality” is specifically addressing the very grim history of pogroms in the Ripky district.
Elias Tcherikower (1881–1943)
Elias Tcherikower (later the head of YIVO’s historical section) formed a committee to document the atrocities, the “Redaktsions-kolegia off tau Hameln un farefentlikhn di materialn vegn di pogromen in ukraine” (Editorial Borad to Collect and Publish the Material about the Pogroms in Ukraine), later known as the “Mizrakh-yidishn hostirishn arkhiv” or Ostjüdisches Historisches Archiv.”
Tcherikower and his committee called on Jews to submit reports of what they had witnessed to their central office in Kiev. A subset of those reports included Galaka pogroms in Chernigov and Minsk regions
Riva Tcherikower (Elias’s wife) was the one who meticulously typed each page of the catalogue.
Their documents are now available on line, along with the other historical evidence.
