The WorkAbility I (WAI) program was initiated in November 1981, as a pilot project to test the concept of work experience for youth with disabilities. The WAI program is funded by the state budget, and administered by the CDE, and provides comprehensive pre-employment skills training, employment placement, and follow-up for high school students enrolled in special education programs who are making the transition from school to work, independent living, and postsecondary education or training. Program services provided are appropriate to individual student needs, abilities, and interests. The WAI program seeks employers in the business community who will provide students with disabilities an opportunity to access work experience in a competitive integrated employment setting. Through a designation as one of the ten best transition programs of its type in the United States, WorkAbility I has received national recognition for its success in matching young adults with disabilities with employers who need workers. In 2022 WorkAbility I celebrated its 40th anniversary.
