IR Procedure & Research

Protocol for Independent Reading:

Students will have opportunities to bring in books from home or the public library, we will have trips to the school library, and Ms. Palof's room has a classroom library. There is ALWAYS a way to find a book to read!

• Students will enter the room, go to their seat, and take out their reading material.

If a student does not have a book they will SILENTLY choose a book or magazine from the classroom library WITH PERMISSION TO GET UP or ask to visit the school library. This will not happen all the time, student will choose wisely how/when to get up for a book so they can earn their daily reading points.

• While students get started reading, select students and/or teacher will pass out any other needed class materials (binders).
• Independent reading will be silent because noise is distracting to others
• During and after independent reading, students will be prepared to talk about their books with others in accountable talk (teacher may ask you to report back and conference with you, etc.)
• Students will read until prompted to stop (approximately 10 minutes of reading)
• After the teacher prompts you to stop, students will SILENTLY turn to their Daily Independent Reading Reflection and work on it for 5 minutes. Students will continue working on this response until teacher opens up discussions or tells students to put it away for the day or to hand it in.
• Teacher will review students’ responses often and may choose to add your daily grade on the spot if time allows.
• The Daily Independent Reading Reflection will be stored in student's Language Arts binder (NOT taken home).
• The Daily Independent Reading Reflection will be collected and a part of students’ weekly grades.
• Daily independent reading and time for reflection will take no more than 15 minutes daily once the routine is established.
• Students will be expected to finish at least one book independently every 6-9 weeks and will work on a project utilizing their chosen book (2 per year). ​Expectations will vary based on students level (some may finish many more books than this depending on pace and if student also reads outside of class, etc.). However ALL students should read at least 4 books this year and will be required to read AT LEAST 2 MINIMUM!
