  • Providing access to essential skills and information

  • Tapping into background knowledge/providing context

  • Providing students with (scaffolded as needed) first exposure to the text(s)

  • Monitoring students basic comprehension & understanding of the major concepts and themes in the text(s)

  • Deepen comprehension of the text

  • Deconstruct the sources for evidence

  • Begin to identify potential claims, reasons and counterclaims
