Welcome to the 2025–26 school year! I hope your year is off to a strong and rewarding start. Each new school year brings excitement and anticipation as we welcome students and staff—both familiar faces and new ones. This year also marks my 25th year as a school library media specialist. Over that time, I’ve witnessed many changes: advancements in technology, reimagined library spaces, and evolving interests and preferences of both students and staff. Yet one thing remains constant—reading. Reading is more than just a skill; it is the foundation for all other learning. Strong reading skills support communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and understanding across every subject.
In the library, we get the gift of a fresh start each year. We can reimagine our space by updating bulletin boards, refreshing posters, and showcasing both new books and those hidden gems that deserve a second chance. Thoughtful displays—whether carefully arranged or simply placed on an eye-level shelf—can spark curiosity and invite readers in. A new year is an opportunity to create something meaningful that will leave a lasting impact on students and the school community. It’s also a chance to let go of negative habits and embrace a positive, gracious mindset—something I’m committed to both professionally and personally this year.
The Jefferson County Association of School Librarians (JCASL) has a proud history as a professional community. As a member for 25 years, the friendships and professional connections I’ve built through JCASL have been invaluable—providing encouragement, creative ideas, and honest feedback when I needed them most. I encourage you to join JCASL to connect with fellow librarians and be part of a community that supports and celebrates the vital work happening in our libraries. This year, I’m honored to serve as President, and I’m eager to work with you to strengthen our profession.
Please join me in advocating for, celebrating, and championing school library media specialists and the essential role of libraries. Now is the perfect time to share the incredible things happening in your library—your voice matters, and it can make a difference.
Wishing you an inspiring, impactful, and successful school year!
