JCPS has an entire department dedicated to closing the achievement gaps between Black/brown students and their white counterparts. This Department is called the Dept. of Diversity, Equity, and Poverty (aka, “The DEP”) Website here.
Our school, Churchill Park, is one of the first school’s in the entire district to have our own school-based racial equity team, where we hold frequent meetings and workshops to further understand and unpack racial inequities that our students and families face. We are ranked one of the top 5 most racially equitable schools, by district assistant superintendents, due to the work we’ve put in at our school and the impact the work has had on staff, students, and their families. We’ve compiled an entire website to share the work we’ve done in our meetings, as well as created a website to be a hub for lessons for teachers to pull from, as we’re encouraged to teach about all holidays that our fellow students and staff may celebrate. We are deeply striving to change the way students see themselves in the classroom and in lessons. We want it to always be uplifting and meaningful. Melissa and I are core members of the school racial equity team, which will lend itself to be extremely beneficial as we move from traditional education to CBE.
