Writing

Unit 2 Authors As Mentors

What do writers do?

Students understand that they can look to authors to learn what they do as writers.

The focus of this unit is to examine a variety of text and consider what those authors had to do in order to write those text. They would explore the process of writing as well as the generation of ideas, organization and style to see how they might replicate that themselves. Students will need support in learning how authors gather ideas, modeling how you can get ideas from things you do, learn and see. Students will work to “add on” this could be adding details in their picture or adding on to their message. Students will begin to organize their thinking in a way that is sequential and shows how events are related. Through modeled, shared and independent writing students will continue to progress along the developmental continuum of writing.
