Social Studies- History: Comparing My Story to Your Story

How does my story compare to your story?

Students understand that people use sequence to describe when events take place (past, present and future). Students will understand that historians learn about the past by asking questions.

In this unit, students will examine their own history by identifying and describing events in their past (yesterday, a week ago...). Students will share information about themselves and put important events from their lives into sequential order. Students begin to see how they have changed over time. Once students understand their own stories, they gain an understanding of their past compared to the past of other children. Students learn about other children through exposure to narrative stories, asking questions, and having conversation. Students can identify important events from the past and use the word “because” when explaining a personal experience or story of the past. Ultimately, students will be able to identify information from personal experiences and narrative stories that answer questions about the past.
