Unit 2- Information Is All Around Us

What can we learn about the world from books?

Students understand that through inquiry and exploration of text readers can gain information.

The focus of this unit is to use engagement and excitement of informational text to build inquiry. Students learn to ask questions and use resources as a means to find answers. By looking at text with engaging pictures students can begin to make reasonable predictions and then dig deeper into books to check their thinking. Finding books with engaging pictures and based on students interest will support their excitement as they explore books. They will recall information from books and develop interest as they explore deeply on topics of interest to them. Discovery Reading is a instructional practice for students to build schema and engagement. Working in partnerships or with teacher support will allow students to gain confidence and prereading skills. Provide students opportunities to talk/ write (draw) about books they have read.
