Food Waste

While visiting students enjoy each other's company over a meal in the dining hall, food is consumed and wasted. Food waste has consequences for our local communities and our global ecosystem. We intend to answer the following study questions:

• How much food waste is generated daily at Windy Peak?
• How does food waste fit into our energy flow and matter cycling models?
• How does food waste contribute to our environmental impact?
• Additional information from the Colorado Sun - America trashes 40% of its food!

Decomposition Model - Started on November 11, 2019

Greenhouse Design Challenge:

We have a beautiful greenhouse at both Outdoor Lab campuses. The Windy Peak greenhouse is being filled with wicking beds. We have one challenge that remains: there are no screens on the windows. Insects, rodents, birds, and soil can pass in and out of the greenhouse. This is not ideal considering that plant pests are likely traveling with each of these critters.

Design challenge:

Build a frame for windows that allows for removable screens and for automatic windows to open and close freely.
